Itinerary

This private journey, with an emphasis on beautiful boutique hotels, takes in Laos' major highlights including the riverside capital Vientiane, the glorious 4000 Islands in the south, and Luang Prabang, Laos' UNESCO protected mountain town, and unofficial cultural capital that's full of old world charm.

  1. Days 1-3: Vientiane

Your vacation begins with two nights in Vientiane, Laos' sleepy capital that hugs the Mekong river. With your private driver and guide, embark on a full day city tour exploring Vientiane's oldest temples that are peppered across the city, such as Wat Sisaket and Wat Prakeo. You'll also have time to visit the fascinating COPE center, a school for monks, and if time permits the quirky Buddha park on the edge of town. In the evening, you may wish to dine at one of the many French-inspired restaurants in town, or perhaps head out to the nightly market at Chao Anouvong to sample some local street food and pick up clothes and souvenirs.

    Accommodation: Ansara Hotel (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-6: Champasak

After a wonderful introduction to Laos in Vientiane the journey takes you south, via a short flight, to Pakse; from here it's just a 40-minute drive to Champasak. Staying three nights in a simple yet comfortable riverside lodge you will be able to explore the famous 4000 islands by car, boat, bicycle and on foot with your guide. Visit waterfalls and islands, and cycle along an abandoned railway as you soak up the gorgeous scenery of Southern Laos. We also hugely recommend a visit to the unmissable Wat Phou, the ‘little brother’ of Cambodia’s world-famous Angkor Wat. Located at the start of an ancient Khmer road which connected the two temple complexes, this UNESCO protected archaeological site offers stunning views as well as a fascinating insight into the great lost Khmer civilization.

Accommodation: The River Resort (3 nights)

  3. Days 6-10: Luang Prabang

After three nights in Champasak, you will head back to Pakse for a direct flight up to Luang Prabang, one of Laos' undisputed highlights. The town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 and therefore its gilded temples, French-Indochinese architecture and river front have all been spared over-development. What remains is arguably the most charming town in Asia. During your time here enjoy a guided city tour taking in the gilded Royal Palace, the Ethnology Center and the incense rich interior of Wat Xieng Thong. We also suggest a fun visit to Kuang Si waterfalls for swimming and trekking, and a cruise up the mighty Mekong river to the mysterious caves of Pak Ou, home to over 4000 images of Buddha. The town itself is full of charming and trendy cafes, restaurants and small boutiques so it's ideal if you like pottering along quiet streets, absorbing the atmosphere. For early birds, why not wake up early to watch the monks silently pacing the streets and collecting alms from the local people in preparation for the day ahead, a truly unique experience and one that is guaranteed to stay with you long after you return home.

    Accommodation: Satri House (4 nights)
