Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Myanmar is during the dry season from November to April. At this time the warm and sunny days are ideal for sightseeing throughout the country. The temperatures start to rise in March and May to September is best avoided as this is the rainy season when sightseeing can become difficult.

Itinerary

This classic itinerary allows you to experience the key destinations in Myanmar from the majestic temple-strewn plains of Bagan to the beauty of Inle Lake. Myanmar has such a unique personality and this 13 night journey provides the ideal introduction to all of the main cultural highlights and to end includes a couple of nights on the largely untouched coast to relax and unwind.

  1. Days 1-3: Yangon

Start your adventure with two nights in Yangon, the bustling city with colorful street life: food hawkers on the pavements, gems in the gem market; rickshaw drivers in striped longyis (sarongs) peddling lazily through tree-lined streets; and people drinking endless cups of sweet, milky tea at roadside tea stalls. From the vast and crumbling colonial buildings of a time gone by to the winding side streets and bustling markets, Yangon holds treasures at each turn. Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset to watch locals paying homage to their deities and also jump on the circular train around Yangon to get a taste of bustling local life. We have included a private guide for you, throughout your two nights in Yangon so that you can really make the most of your time here.

Accommodation: Belmond Governor's Residence (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-4: Rural Burma

Next it is on to Kalaw, which you will reach by a short flight to Heho followed by a drive of just over an hour. The former British colonial hill station is a beautiful place to explore and you’ll have one night here. On your first full day we have included a visit to the Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp, where they have rescued old timber working elephants and they now spend their retirement in a lovely area just outside of Kalaw. You can feed and bathe the elephants in the river before planting a tree as part of their reforestation project. Drive back to Kalaw and hopefully catch the market before seeing what remains of the colonial era bungalows.

Accommodation: Amara Mountain Resort (1 night)

  3. Days 4-6: Inle Lake

Next stop on your journey is the vast Inle Lake, which you will reach by a car transfer to the Lake followed by a boat transfer. Inle Lake is where the locals row their traditional boats in an extraordinary fashion - with one leg wrapped around the oar, standing up in the boat. Encounter the floating villages, markets and stunning bird life around this enormous lake, with its mountainous surroundings and panoramic views. Journeying around the lake is done by private boat so sit back, relax and enjoy viewing the world around as you motor along. Stops will be made as you explore this beautiful area and we have included visits to Phuang Daw Oo Pagoda and local surrounding villages where traditional weaving still takes place to support the local communities. Should your dates overlap we can also include a trip to the morning market which rotates locations on a 5-day basis and provides a brilliant insight into local life on the lake.

Accommodation: Villa Inle Resort & Spa (2 nights)

  4. Days 6-8: Mandalay

After two nights on Inle Lake you will transfer back to Heho airport where you’ll take another short internal flight to Mandalay, Myanmar’s last royal capital where you will be spending the following two nights. The city is still the religious heart of the country, and is home stunning pagodas and arts and crafts. We have included a private guide for you here to show you all the highlights including the Kuthodaw Pagoda and the former capitals of Ava, Sagaing and Amarapura with Sagaing being widely recognised as the religious center of Myanmar and home to over 3,000 monks and 100 meditation centers. During your exploration of these beautiful sites you’ll also have the chance to visit some fantastic local markets that few tourists tend to visit before finishing the day at the iconic U-Bein Bridge, the perfect photographic opportunity. During your time in Mandalay we can also include a night time tour of Mandalay by motorbike! Along the way you’ll visit colorful night markets and then stop in a local beer station for dinner - the perfect place to try local cuisine and live like locals!

Accommodation: The Hotel by the Red Canal (2 nights)

  5. Days 8-9: Irrawaddy River

Next on the adventure is your cruise along the Irrawaddy River for one night. You’ll meet your boat in Mandalay and over the next two days, slowly make your way down stream to Bagan as you watch daily life pass you by. See village children splashing and playing along the banks, encounter remote villages and wave at the friendly locals who smile as you pass them by.

    Accommodation: RV Paukan (1 night)

  6. Days 9-11: Bagan

On arrival at the Bagan jetty in you will be met by your private guide and start exploring the flat plains that are dotted with 2,000 temples and pagodas which stretch as far as the eye can see. With centuries of history and culture be amazed by the intricacy of the ancient murals and carvings. Alongside the many pagodas there are a number of interesting workshops that we have also included visits to, especially lacquerware and wood crafts, with masters using techniques that have been past down from generation to generation. Of course a real highlight of visiting Bagan is taking a Balloon ride over the many temples at sunrise.

Accommodation: Aureum Palace Resort (2 nights)

  7. Days 11-14: Ngapali Beach

For the final leg of your adventure head to the unspoiled sands of Ngapali Beach for some rest and relaxation after your jam packed schedule. Ngapali truly is one of the last untouched beaches in Asia, with un-crowded expanses of white sand and a lovely laid-back atmosphere.

    Accommodation: Sandoway Resort (3 nights)
