Average time to visit

Antarctic weather is a lesson in extremes. Antarctica is the world’s coldest, windiest and driest continent. During the summer months the winds abate considerably and the weather is surprisingly comfortable, averaging between 20 and 50F. Summertime also means 18-24 hours of sunlight which allows life to flourish for a brief summer period. Long days also allow extensive exploration by small ship cruise to Antarctica. Antarctic weather allows for a short season of cruising from November to March each year.

Itinerary

The classic Antarctica itinerary offers an unforgettable voyage along the incredible Antarctic Peninsula. Fly into the buzzing Argentine capital to kick start your trip before heading south. From Ushuaia, set sail across the Drake before spending five days exploring the peninsula, home to bustling penguins, playful seals and towering icebergs. Many boats sail this route, generally varying their itineraries by a day or two, meaning there is a great amount of choice throughout the season.

  1. Fly to Buenos Aires

  2. Days 1-3: Buenos Aires

Arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina's lively capital, best known for its fiery passions: tango and football. We've included a private tour with a local guide to give you insider knowledge on the best that this vibrant city has to offer. In the evening, to Rojo Tango, the city's best tango show and enjoy the music and the movements of this beautiful dance performed by the pros.

    Accommodation: Legado Mitico (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Ushuaia

Fly south to the Argentine port city of Ushuaia and transfer to your hotel that has beautiful views across the Beagle Channel. This tiny town is not just the gateway to Antarctica but also the beautiful Tierra del Fuego National Park. We've included a full day trip into the park so you have the opportunity to stretch your legs before your upcoming days at sea.

Accommodation: Los Cauquenes Resort & Spa (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-14: Antarctica

At the agreed schedule you will be greeted aboard the ship by your expedition team and crew. Set sail across the Drake Passage: time at sea is best spent attending the expert lectures given on board and when conditions allow, heading out on deck to spot icebergs and the array of seabirds that follow the ships such as albatross and giant petrel.

Approaching the Antarctic Peninsula, you enter the breathtaking landscape that is yours to explore over the next few days. Stepping off zodiacs onto a beach speckled with penguins and seals is a memorable experience, and each time you make that journey you’re likely to be greeted by different sightings and photo opportunities. One day you may head out in a zodiac to search for whales, and the next you could be hiking to a penguin rookery. With your expedition team on hand to alert you to any sightings, you’ll have the benefit of their expert knowledge and experience to get the best from the Antarctic Peninsula.

After a memorable voyage through some of the world’s most remote and unvisited lands, return across the Drake back to Ushuaia.

    Accommodation: M/V Hondius (9 nights)

  5. Days 14-15: Buenos Aires

Disembarking in Ushuaia, transfer to the airport and take your short flight back to Buenos Aires for your final night in the capital.
