Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

California is a year-round destination. During the summer, between June and September when many other long-haul destinations are best avoided due to the weather, California is at its peak and is fabulous for enjoying the beaches, alfresco dinners and attending festivals such as Santa Barbara's wine festival. In San Francisco some warm clothes are always needed as thick summer fog can make the region surprisingly cold at night. September and October Fall time is also a fantastic time to visit, when the crowds have gone and California sees some its sunniest days during its Indian Summer.

Insider's View

If you are not the type of couple to laze on the beach, then why do that on your honeymoon? A California road-trip provides the perfect balance of action and indulgence. Why not add in Yosemite National Park or the alpine lake of Tahoe for an extra dose of adventure.

We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. Call us on 020 3993 8245 to start planning your holiday.

Collect your Ford Mustang, let the roof down and drive the iconic Pacific Highway from hip San Francisco to star-studded Los Angeles. Explore rolling vineyards, Pacific surf beaches and chic coastal towns on the ultimate honeymoon road-trip.

  1. Days 1-4: San Francisco

Your first stop is the eclectic city of San Francisco, with its hip neighbourhoods, great restaurants, and palpable sense of history, it's made for exploring. Explore the colourful counter-culture of Mission District or Haight-Ashbury, have a great meal in Chinatown, and enjoy fresh Oysters in the Ferry Building down by Fisherman’s Wharf. The next day, rent a bicycle and cross the Golden Gate Bridge to picturesque Sausalito. Enjoy a delicious lunch overlooking the bay and wander the boutique shops with an ice cream in hand. You may also enjoy a fascinating visit to Alcatraz Island, an infamous prison once home to notorious criminals.

    Accommodation: Hotel Vitale (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-7: Napa Valley

After your final night in San Francisco, collect your Ford Mustang, put the roof down and cruise along the highway to Napa Valley, California's much celebrated wine destination. Boasting rolling vineyards, the scenery here is just as gorgeous as the wine. We have included a Sip & Cycle Experience so you can spend a day cycling through the vineyards and wine tasting. Or alternatively you can take it all in from the air with a dawn hot air balloon ride followed by a champagne brunch. We can also assist with making reservations for you at the top restaurants in town, including the infamous Michelin starred French Laundry.

Accommodation: North Block Hotel (3 nights)

  3. Days 7-9: Big Sur

Then it's onto one of America's most iconic drives along the Pacific Highway One; the road hugs the contours of the coastline with boundless Pacific horizons and views of the crashing surf. To truly appreciate the romance of rugged Big Sur, we recommend two nights in the spectacular Ventana Big Sur, a beautiful property overlooking the wild and untamed California coastline, offering unparalleled service and luxurious guestrooms; perfect for a romantic getaway.

Accommodation: Ventana Big Sur, An Alila Resort (2 nights)

  4. Days 9-12: Santa Barbara

After two relaxing nights here, continue your drive down the Pacific Highway, pass the iconic McWay Falls and sweeping Morro Bay. Along the way, you'll uncover hidden beaches and coves, crashing waterfalls and quaint coastal towns with seafood shacks serving the freshest catch.

Arrive in Santa Barbara, a chic Southern California town with a strong Spanish influence. Waving palm trees, bobbing boats in the harbour and Spanish colonial architecture will greet you as you drive in through the town. The beautiful Belmond El Encanto is utterly romantic, with private cottages dotted among tropical gardens and an infinity pool with ocean views as far as the eye can see. Borrow electric bikes to effortlessly explore downtown boutiques and urban wine tasting rooms or take the house car into town to dine at the town’s romantic restaurants.

Accommodation: Belmond El Encanto (3 nights)

  5. Days 12-15: Los Angeles

End your honeymoon on a high in the City of Angels. Packed with celebrities, take a movie star home tour, visit the Chinese Theatre or head to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. You may also be visiting during baseball season, and cheering on the dodgers makes for a great night out. We can arrange many different tours to ensure you make the most of your time here; we have included a private guided hike to the Hollywood Sign or you can stargaze at the Griffith Observatory or spend the day relaxing at the beach in Santa Monica, the perfect way to end your romantic holiday in California.

Accommodation: Viceroy L'Ermitage Beverly Hills (3 nights)
