Beach, Family, Couples, Diving

Enjoy the best of both worlds, combining Mexico's stunning beaches and the buzz of Mexico City. A great option for couples and families alike, the best time of year for this trip is between November and April, making it ideal for a winter or Easter break.

Start off with three nights in Mexico City, getting used to the climate, exploring colorful markets, and listening to mariachi bands singing in Plaza Garibaldi. Tickle your tastebuds at one of the many up-and-coming restaurants, admire the country's artistic heritage at the Palacio de Bellas Artes or Frida Kahlo's home, or travel in a vintage streetcar and simply soak in the sights and sounds of this vibrant and cosmopolitan capital.

Fly from here to the Riviera Maya, traveling an hour south from Cancun to a beautiful, unspoiled beach, Xpu-ha, where you will stay at the lovely Esencia for six nights. From here you can enjoy snorkeling and diving on the world's second largest coral reef, unwind with some yoga or play a round of golf. The hotel has a beautiful organic spa if you need a little help getting into chill-out mode, too. The property used to be the exclusive beach retreat of an Italian duchess and has just 29 rooms on a property that covers 50 acres, so you'll find it easy to find a peaceful spot to unwind.

If the stunning beach and the watersports aren't enough to keep you entertained, you can easily spend some time exploring inland, visiting the ancient Mayan ruins at Tulum.

When to go

The best time to visit is typically during the drier, slightly milder months between November and April. The ‘rainy’ season begins in the south around June and runs until November. Although it can be hotter and more humid at this time of year, usually it only rains for a couple of hours before the weather clears. The wettest months tend to be September and October. The Caribbean coast can be affected by the hurricane season, which officially is from June to November.
