Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Cambodia and Laos are hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May, which continues until September, however it is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms and the benefit is that both countries feel quiet, with fewer tourists. November is a fantastic month to visit both as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water, however this time of year is a little busier and some sights can feel crowded.

Itinerary

Explore Laos and Cambodia in this wonderfully unique 12-day journey that's perfect for both couples and families who really want to get under the skin of the two countries and stay in the most authentic yet luxurious properties. It takes in Luang Prabang, the scenic 4000 Islands in Champasak, the temples of Angkor and Cambodia's unspoiled coastline and islands.

  1. Days 1-4: Luang Prabang

Your adventure begins in Laos, in the cultural hub of the country high up in the mountains of the north. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a sleepy little town, crammed with picturesque streets, glittering temples and fascinating history. Nestled among the mountains, this is the perfect destination for those seeking a truly authentic experience. There are several wonderful boutique properties in the town, each with a unique story to tell. Here we have suggested Apsara Rive Droit, located minutes from the center of town and accessed by a 30-second longtail boat trip across the Nam Khan river. The quiet streets of the town are perfect for exploring on foot or by bicycle, but to truly understand the area from a local’s perspective we have included a day tour with one of our friendly guides who will show you highlights such as the Royal Palace with its gold tiled walls, and the stunning Wat Xieng Thong, arguably one of the most beautiful temples in Asia. End the day watching the sun set from the top of Mount Phousi or listening to the evening chanting of monks in a cool temple yard. We also thoroughly recommend taking a day to relax at the pristine Kuang Si waterfall. Take a picnic and your swimming gear and wander up towards the main cascade, passing levels of cool blue pools, perfect for a dip. Feel the spray on your face as your guide explains the myth of the golden deer or hike up to the top to take in the views.

Accommodation: Apsara Rive Droite (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-6: Southern Laos

From here the journey heads south with a short flight to Pakse, and a 45-minute drive to the little town of Muang Champasak. Staying in one of the comfortable riverside properties on this serene segment of the Mekong this is the perfect place for learning about island life. It’s a wonderfully relaxing area, with beautiful sunsets and a peaceful atmosphere. Nearby are the famous 4000 islands, perfect for hiking, and we have included a tour to Wat Phou, a UNESCO protected temple complex known as the ‘little brother’ of Cambodia’s famous Angkor Wat. Wat Phou is located at the start of the ancient Khmer Road, which once wound south, all the way to the city of Angkor.

Accommodation: The River Resort (2 nights)

  3. Days 6-9: Siem Reap

Siem Reap in Cambodia is next; just a short direct flight from Pakse a few days of the week, or otherwise via Laos’ capital, Vientiane. Siem Reap is the town closest to the Angkor Archaeological Site, and is a lively area full of colorful markets, boutiques and local restaurants. We recommend at least three nights here to fully enjoy the town, not just the temples. Our talented tour guides specialize in getting you off the beaten track, steering you away from the crowds to the lesser known temples, deep in the jungle. The tranquillity and beauty of the structures is breath-taking, and a day will be well spent exploring the crumbling ruins of this abandoned city. We also recommend waking up early to watch the sun rise over the most famous temple, Angkor Wat. Your guide will be able to ensure you have a good view for this very popular experience.

There are also some fabulous boutique options in Siem Reap, but here we have suggested Sala Lodges, a unique resort made up of 11 restored and authentic Khmer stilted bungalows, each with its own name and character. One of our favorites is ‘Dop’, meaning ‘the house with the tilted balcony’.

    Accommodation: Sala Lodges (3 nights)

  4. Days 9-13: Coastal Cambodia

The trip concludes with a stay in Kep; once a popular retreat for the Khmer elite in the 1950s, it's now a peaceful coastal retreat with a charm rarely found on Asia's coastline these days. Just a short flight from Siem Reap to capital of Phnom Penh, and then a scenic 2 to 3-hour drive past coconut farms and pepper plantations, for which the area is famous. Spend time relaxing in your room at Knai Bang Chatt, a small hotel of just 18 rooms spread over five 1960s villas. Here you could learn to sail, go fishing, kayak along the coast or enjoy a spa treatment. We also highly recommend a trip to Rabbit Island and a snorkeling trip off the coast of one of the islands in the Koh Rong Archipelago, or trekking in the national park.

Accommodation: Knai Bang Chatt (4 nights)

Experiences

  • Temples of the Forest

This fantastic tour is geared around avoiding the crowds, getting you to Ta Prohm, Ta Nei and Ta Keo at the quietest time of day. Ensconced in jungle, these temples are ideal for adventurous families and couples wanting an Indiana Jones experience!
