Malaysia and Borneo's climate is hot and humid. Expect temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s throughout the lowlands. The state’s rainfall averages about 300cm annually and though it rains throughout the year, the heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January. In Indonesia, May through to October brings the best weather, with warm sunny days and tropical temperatures.
This itinerary combines Borneo’s dense wildlife filled jungles with Kuala Lumpur’s city vistas and Bali’s bountiful beaches. See orangutans and pygmy elephants in their native environment and immerse yourself in Borneo’s wilderness rainforest before travelling to Indonesia to experience its diverse culture, varied history and of course golden beaches.
Your discovery of Borneo and Bali begins in Sepilok in north-eastern Borneo. Home to the islands most famed inhabitant, the orangutan it is here where you will have your first encounter with one of these gracefully elusive creatures. Visit the renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre famed for rescuing orphaned, injured or captive orangutans. Learn about the plight of Borneo’s orangutans and the conservation efforts in place to protect them before opting to see the world’s smallest bear – The Bornean Sun Bear. Spend time with these beautiful creatures learning from knowledgeable guides about sustainability and animal conservation – the perfect introduction to your discovery of Malaysia.
The area around the Kinabatangan River has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Borneo, and this is where you will spend the next two nights. Although most of the accommodation is charmingly rustic, it is here that you will have some amazing opportunities to witness rare species in the wild. Explore the Kinabatangan wetlands and take a guided boat trip (included) through the mangroves keeping a look out for proboscis monkeys, rare Hornbills, pygmy elephants and possibly even wild orangutans or opt to explore the jungle after dark, when the sounds of the rainforest are deafening.
On to the nearby Danum Valley for the next couple of days where you will have time to really get under the skin of Malaysian Borneo. Chat with your local guides and learn about modern day life in Borneo whilst enjoying extended wildlife cruises, walks and jungle hikes. For the adventurous we have included an adrenalin-pumping canopy walk high above the rainforest allowing you a different visual perspective of the dense jungle or alternatively we can arrange an exhilarating excursion river tubing along one of the Kinabatangan River’s many tributaries.
Returning to mainland Malaysia, spend a night in the heart of Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur before continuing to Indonesia. Spend the day at leisure in Kuala Lumpur ensuring you make time to ascend the dramatic Petronas Towers that offer breath-taking views across the city or simply relax in your chosen city hotel.
After your whirlwind Borneo adventure its on to Bali, Indonesia’s most renowned island paradise. Spend the next few days on Bali’s South-western coast in the beachside resort of Seminyak. Home to a plethora of boutiques, restaurants and luxury hotels, Seminyak provides the perfect base to explore the rest of Bali in your own leisure. Opt to stay in one of the areas luxe hotels enjoying the first-class facilities or alternatively spend your days exploring the wider region from cultural Ubud, to the picturesque temples of Tanah Lot and Uluwatu. Bali is that perfect mix between culture and adventure and offers sensational beaches, dramatic volcanoes, varied cuisine and of course a diverse culture and history – a wonderful destination to spend the last days of your exotic adventure around Borneo and Bali.
