Itinerary

Discover the rural heartland of Iberia with this fantastic itinerary combining city and countryside. Travel from vibrant Lisbon to traditional Alentejo, then cross the border into Seville and the picturesque scenery of Andalucia.

  1. Fly to Lisbon

  2. Days 1-5: Lisbon

Begin your journey through Iberia in Portugal's capital, Lisbon. This vibrant city is one of the oldest in western Europe and each of its distinct neighborhoods bears the mark of rulers past, from the Romans to the Moors. Spend four nights in the heart of the city and wander through the winding streets of colorful districts such as Chiado and Bairro Alto, or take one of Lisbon's iconic yellow trams to discover picturesque Lisbon.

Dedicate a day to exploring further afield, escaping the city to admire the nearby town of Sintra. This fascinating town is home to a wealth of palaces and castles scattered throughout its tree-clad mountains. Discover Moorish design and Gothic architecture as you spend a day taking in this magical UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Accommodation: Pousada de Lisboa (4 nights)

  3. Days 5-8: Alentejo

After soaking up the culture of trendy Lisbon, continue east to get off the tourist trail in Portugal's Alentejo. This is the largest region in the country and home to traditional farming methods, vast cork plantations and charming medieval villages. Step back in time as you arrive at the 200-year-old farm estate, São Lourenço do Barrocal, where you'll spend three nights surrounded by idyllic countryside, sampling local produce at the farm-to-table restaurant. This huge estate is the perfect spot for relaxing, with a tranquil spa as well as acres of olive groves and vineyards to explore.

Those looking for a more active stay can visit nearby Evora and Monsaraz, picturesque medieval villages with winding cobbled streets, ancient town walls and fantastic views. Explore the estate on horseback, following a variety of trails through the spectacular Alentejan scenery, and by night, visit the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserva, a protected area offering incredible stargazing opportunities.

Accommodation: Sao Lourenco do Barrocal (3 nights)

  4. Days 8-11: Seville

Continue east, crossing the border into Spain where your first stop will be in Seville, spending four nights surrounded by the hustle and bustle of this vibrant city. The Andalucian capital of culture, Seville boasts truly breathtaking architecture, from the immense Gothic cathedral to the intricate Mudéjar design of the Real Alcazar.

Spend your days in Seville exploring the city's charming districts, such as the medieval Jewish quarter, Barrio de Santa Cruz, and admiring its famous landmarks. After visiting the cathedral, one of the largest in the world, be sure to climb to the top of the Giralda bell tower for spectacular views across the city. By night, soak up Seville's colorful atmosphere, mingling with the locals as you sample the very best in tapas.

Accommodation: Corral del Rey (3 nights)

  5. Days 11-15: Andalucia

For your final stop, head into rural Andalucia to spend three nights at Finca La Donaira, a boutique, eco-luxury property in the heart of the countryside. This traditional farmhouse is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, from verdant valleys to soaring mountains, which is easily explored on foot or on one of the estate's 70 Lusitano horses. A real haven for equestrians, Finca La Donaira offers a huge choice of lessons, including dressage and beginner-friendly introductions to riding.

If you're able to tear yourself away from the delights of Finca La Donaira's spa and the delicious farm-to-table dishes served at the communal kitchen table, the beautiful hilltop towns of Andalucia are within easy reach. Make your way to the romantic white villages or to the enchanting town of Ronda, perched dramatically above El Tajo gorge.
