Ecuador is a year round destination. Due to its position on the equator and its altitude, Quito’s temperature varies greatly between night and day. Daytime temperatures average 23-25ºC, while at night temperatures drop to around 10ºC. In general, days are clear in the morning and cloud over in the afternoon, with rain common in the afternoon. The drier season in the Andes runs from the end of May to the end September, with another brief summertime in early December (which coincides nicely with the city’s fiestas). There is no defined dry season in the Amazon, and rain can be expected at any time of year being a tropical rainforest.
Discover Ecuador's authentic charm on this journey from a traditional working hacienda in its Andean highlands to the Amazon Rainforest. Immerse yourself in local indigenous communities and assist with a charitable project in the Amazon before getting to know the wildlife.
Fly into Quito and head straight out of the city to the beautiful countryside which sits on the slopes of the Andes and provides a wonderful insight into rural local life in Ecuador. Hacienda Zuleta is a traditional boutique property and is the perfect place to unwind after a long international flight, offering comfortable home-from-home accommodation, delicious home-made food and plenty of opportunities to get outdoors. This family-run hacienda offers fantastic horse riding, as well as a number of walking trails or mountain bike runs. It also boasts a successful condor conservation and recuperation project on site which is well worth a visit for a glimpse of these impressive birds!
Return to Quito to connect with the short flight which will see you cross from city to rainforest, as you soar over the mighty Amazon which stretches underneath you for miles. On arrival at Coca, you will board a shared boat along the Napo River, and after a gentle 2-hour journey you will come across Minga Lodge, which is run by the fantastic charity, Me to We. Packages are available from 3 nights up to 8 nights, but the 3-night package offers a chance to experience the region whilst still immersing yourselves into the project, which is aimed at empowering the local communities through sustainable development. Every care is taken to ensure that visitors to the project are well integrated and the project is handled tastefully. Get stuck into building, learn to throw a spear, take part in a shamanic ceremony or even help a farmer achieve his daily tasks.
As well as exploring the local culture, enjoy opportunities to head out on wildlife watching excursions, staying for a further four nights at La Selva Amazon Lodge. This is one of the most bio-diverse regions on the planet and is home to hundreds of species of plants, birds, insects and other animals. Hike forest trails, observe parrot clay-licks and paddle along the Napo River by kayak or canoe and look out for caiman and turtles. Night walks are also included in your stay so you can get up close to the nocturnal wildlife and enjoy the sounds of the forest, which comes to life at night.
Return to Quito, travelling along the Napo River to Coca before catching your final flight. If this doesn't provide enough of a wildlife fix, it's easy to extend this trip with a visit to the magical Galapagos Islands, either for a cruise or a land-based stay.
