Description

Designed by the Swiss architect, Heinz Julen, well-known for his individual style, a stay at the new Backstage Vernissage Hotel is a unique experience! Closely linked to the Zermatt Unplugged music festival, the theme is 'backstage' and 'behind the scenes', the idea being that it's the place to relax during the intermission before going back on stage. At the hotel, guests can have a break from their everyday lives and return fully revitalised!

The glass-fronted hotel is in the heart of Zermatt, and the Vernissage building incorporates a bar, lounge-restaurant, dinner cinema, club nights, concerts and art exhibitions. The hotel occupies the upper floors of the building and has views of the Matterhorn or of the village.

Rooms are all open-plan and quirky, and range from standard rooms to Cube Lofts. The beds take center stage and the Cube Lofts are designed as a 'cube within a cube'. Mainstream is not the thing here, and the 'backstage' theme continues in the bedrooms where not all walls are painted and some are roughly painted.

The breakfast room/lounge area has a glass wall with views over the village, and in keeping with the cultural link to music, pride of place is taken by the huge chandelier made up of violins and trumpets, silver beads and a disco ball for good measure. The chandelier is lowered over the balcony onto the street and ritually accompanied by artists and musicians into the music tent during 'Zermatt Unplugged'.

After skiing, the only place to head to is the spa. The spa's theme is the 'seven days of creation' and there are seven spa cubes to experience, each with a different focus, ranging from 'water and air' to the 'cosmos' and the 'plantworld'. As well as the cubes, there is a heated outdoor stainless steel jacuzzi in the center of the terrace

In an ideal location in the village, the Backstage Vernissage is just a few minutes walk from the Gornergrat railway. The resort itself lies at an altitude of 1620 meters at the foot of the world-renowned Matterhorn and surrounded by an additional 38 majestic peaks. Due to its southerly location, Zermatt shares part of its border with Italy and thus enjoys a mild climate with extended periods of sunshine. Although a beautiful and internationally renowned spot with numerous hotels, restaurants, bars and elegant shops, Zermatt has never lost any of its village charm and both in summer and winter remains an ideal spot for an active, refreshing or relaxing vacation.

Facilities

The breakfast room, the 'Café Du Théâtre' evokes the "Belle Époque" theatre atmosphere of times gone by, and as well as the famous chandelier, a baroque gold mirror is noteworthy.

The spa is a must-visit experience, with plenty of video and sound installations. Day 1 is 'light', a pitch black scented steam room with a central globe which starts to light up. Day 2 is 'the separation of water and air', a hot relaxation room in which you lie down on infrared heated glass pearls and watch the clouds that are beamed onto the ceiling pass by, whilst listening to the wind. Day 3 is the 'world of plants', a humid jungle cube with lavender aromas. Day 4 is the 'creation of the planets and tides', a sauna where images of the Hubble Telescope are beamed onto the screen. Day 5 is the 'animal world', a salt-water flotation tank accompanied by whale song and birdsong. Day 6 is 'the human being' with its 'magic mirror', and Day 7 is 'rest and meditation', a meditation room with a water bed, classical music and an image of Michelangelo’s 'creation of Adam' on the ceiling.

Activities

Zermatt is part of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise area, home to 350km of pistes, with a connection to Cervinia in Italy. There’s enough to keep skiers of all standards amused. The village itself is a pleasure to explore, whether on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage, with a wealth of shops, restaurants and historic buildings to enjoy. Exploring the mountain is also straightforward with mountain railways and some wonderful walks, whether on foot or on snowshoes. If you would like a really close view of the Matterhorn, a helicopter flight around it is truly breathtaking.

Zermatt is much more of a cultural center than many other resorts. The Matterhorn Museum is a must-see with fascinating exhibits and the English church is a highlight, especially at Christmas. Every April, the Zermatt Unplugged music festival attracts big name acts.

There are also plenty more active possibilities including the fitness center, indoor tennis and squash, gym, heli-skiing, ice skating, paragliding, stunning walking tours, gorge adventures, ice climbing and tobogganing.

When to go

Zermatt offers excellent conditions throughout a long season. Skiing is well under way by early December and even late November due to high altitude glacial terrain around 4000m. As the season progresses, lower runs offer great conditions too and the skiing below 2000m is appealing when it gets really cold. By April when other resorts can be knee deep in slush, Zermatt will have the best conditions in the Alps. Check out the Zermatt Unplugged music festival in April too.
