Golf course and Academy

Dave Thomas put more than 50 years of experience of the professional golf industry into the creation of Abama’s golf course, now widely regarded as one of his greatest achievements. Rambling over 6,271 metres of ever-changing terrain, it features 22 lakes linked by impressive waterfalls and white-sand bunkers, and 25,000 palm trees. The course reaches a high point of 315 metres above sea level, and most holes provide spectacular views of the Atlantic and the island of La Gomera. The large greens provide an infinite choice of flag positions which, combined with the wide tee areas at each hole, makes the course accessible to players with high handicaps, and a challenge even for the most experienced golfer.

While the golf course is challenging enough to test the most seasoned player, there’s plenty for beginners here too. At the golf academy, less experienced golfers can develop their confidence and skills on the five-hectare practice area, or try out one of the three par-3 holes for beginners, all under the expert supervision of highly qualified trainers. There is also a superb driving range and a putting green.

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama is the ideal resort for either short-haul winter sunshine especially good for travelling with young children - or it can be a great option for our summer months too, being really competitively priced when compared to the usual summer escapes. Also with children in mind it is great for ticking the boxes of no time difference and a short transfer. I was also pleasantly surprised with the whole resort having been previously hesitant from the photos thinking it may be imposing it really isnt at all once you are there and I really loved it and would love to return with my kids again soon!

There is a huge choice of restaurants, from Michelin starred to more casual and great options for all tastes I was so impressed with the quality of them all and had some of the most delicious tapas, seafood and the desserts were worth skipping the diet for! I would recommend making reservations ahead of arrival if you visit over particularly busy times though to avoid disappointment.

I particularly loved the choice of swimming pools all heated, especially the beach entrance format of the family pools around the Citadel perfect for little toddlers and babies! And their Kids Club Ritz Kids is fantastic too with plenty of indoor and outdoor space.

Whilst there I was also lucky enough to indulge in the most heavenly spa treatment and enjoyed relaxing in the spa circuit afterwards highly recommended to wash away those aches and pains! And if you love tennis then I would also highly recommend a lesson at the Annabel Croft Academy the pros are incredibly talented and reignited my love for the sport which I havent been able to take enjoy having children!

If you want to get out and about there are a few trips on offer, whether you are keen on a little hike or trip to Mount Teide, or you may prefer a more relaxing boat trip sailing out to sea to spot some pilot shark whales or bottlenose dolphins you may even see some turtles too! The hotel can arrange all this for you once there!

I know everyone says it, but there really is something for everyone at the Abama!

Ridley Family - April 2017 (Guest)

Not only was the hotel lovely, but I cannot praise the staff there enough, they were just so kind, friendly and helpful. I
have never had such good service with such beaming smiles.

Weller Family - December 2017 (Guest)

Restaurant choice at the Abama is excellent and a varied menu of included food for under 4s made eating with our
kids much easier. The restaurant staff were on hand to entertain the kids too so we could have a few moments to
enjoy our meal.

Alice Peal (Staff)

The Ritz-Carlton Abama, although quite an imposing building, offers delicious food, friendly service and something for everyone and sunshine year round. The size of the resort is necessary to encompass all the facilities and activities on offer from the fantastic tennis and golf facilities, to the many pools and restaurants, spa and kids club, but they still manage to offer personal service, particularly when staying in the Club or Villa rooms.

There is a big choice of restaurants, so somewhere to suit all ages and tastes, prices are reflective of it carrying the Ritz-Carlton name and being a 5* resort, but the food and service in the restaurants is very impressive and is in line with what you would expect at the smaller, more intimate hotels.

Apart from a couple of excursions such as the Big Smile boat trip or Mount Teide visit, the local area doesnt offer much to explore or much culture, but the Abama has pretty much everything you could need on your doorstep!

Jenny James (Staff)

The Abama is perfect for a winter sunshine holiday, due to the temperate climate of Tenerife the weather is consistently warm from March through to October / November, a perfect destination for an October half term or Easter break.

For families the connecting rooms in the hotel are well located, being close to the main facilities. Being located in the villas is also a great option and if you book the garden view suites, your rooms will be located on the ground floor level, opening directly onto the gardens.

It is worth noting that the surrounding local area really doesnt have much wow factor and does feel quite developed so if you are looking to do some experiences in Tenerife perhaps consider visiting Mount Teide (the tallest volcano in Europe!) or taking a boat trip for the day.

Overall the Ritz Carlton Abama service was excellent, friendly and efficient staff in the restaurants. I was particularly impressed with the delicious food, lunch at Los Chozos was my favourite, fresh fish and tapas, followed by dinner at Verona (the Italian restaurant).

Hugo Snell (Staff)

I enjoyed a short trip to the Ritz Carlton Abama in November; A large luxury 5* resort in a very peaceful part of the Island. It offers everything you could possibly need adult only pools for couples, The Ritz Kidz club and kids pools for families, Michelin starred restaurants, a secluded beach, tennis courts and a world renowned golf course; The Ritz really has something for everyone.

I really enjoyed the fact that I left the UK in freezing temperatures and arrived in 25-degree heat making Tenerife a reliable all year-round winter sun option. The resort is built on a slope leading down to the beach and therefore walking around can be quite tiring! The food on offer here is excellent with two Michelin starred restaurants and many others to satisfy everyones taste buds. I enjoyed some great food and local wine in Txoko which I would highly recommend. Overall The Ritz Carlton Abama offers a very peaceful resort to relax in with very little distractions to take you away from having an amazing time with your family.

Clare Leigh (Staff)

Even at almost full occupancy the Abama offers a haven of tranquillity. Guests somehow manage to disperse themselves around the resort so there is never an area that feels busy or cramped.

With a huge array of different restaurants to dine in you will have difficulty in choosing your favourite! Whether it be Sushi or Tapas, Steak or Seafood, all are excellent choices! I would recommend that you double check any dinner reservations made as there have been instances where the incorrect time has been booked.

The resort is set on a hillside so you will be relying on the little train and the funicular to get you to and from the beach. The funicular is prone to being a little temperamental so be prepared to use the steps down to the beach and the train back up.

The year round climate provides a welcome winter sun break and with a flight time of just 4 hours you can be chipping ice off your windscreen one minute and donning your flip flops the next!

Debbie Rainsford (Staff)

Designed by renowned Chilian architect Melvin Villaroel, the Ritz-Carlton Abama resort is located within lush green countryside and a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas normally associated with Tenerife.

Combining both hotel accommodation and villas, including the adult only Tagor Villas, the resort has something for everyone. I particularly liked the new Club Level rooms on the 10th floor which offer the best views of the ocean, enhanced benefits with a dedicated concierge service and club lounge, serving complimentary food and drinks throughout the day.

The Spa is a real retreat if you want to relax and unwind. There is such a choice of treatments and rituals to choose from, it could take a whole week to work your way through the Spa menu. A fully equipped Health Club is just next door should you wish to burn off a few calories in the gym or with an experienced personal trainer or if Golf is your game of choice, the 18-hole championship course designed by Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas is one of the best courses in Spain and has a fantastic golf academy and dedicated driving range.

Anna Crowther (Staff)

The Abama is the perfect escape for winter sunshine. The weather is always warm but just in case, all the swimming pools are heated. The rooms are beautifully decorated with great interconnecting options for families. The kids club is one of the best set ups Ive seen apart from our own clubs. The facilities are great with a really spacious outdoor area.

I really loved the feel of the resort with palm trees and luscious gardens throughout. In the centre is the koi carp pond with little bridges over the water and a floor full of the majority of the restaurants which comes alive in the evenings.

Whether you are wanting golf, tennis, amazing food or just to relax, the Abama really does have something for everyone.

A happy child equals happy parents and children are sure to be thrilled by the new and expanded childrens club at the Abama Golf & Spa Resort in Tenerife.

Among the largest in Europe, the club houses eight diverse zones to occupy and entertain four- to 11-year-olds. Future eco-warriors will love the Scientific Area where workshops are run by expert naturalists from Loro Parque.

The 160 hectare estate also features seven swimming pools, 10 dining options, a private beach and comes fully equipped with baby essentials including changing stations and buggies.

  • Loro Parque Tenerife

A world of adventure awaits at one of Tenerife's favourite family attractions, Loro Parque. Located in Puerto Cruz around 1 hour and 20 minutes drive away, you'll need to allow a full day away from the sun to enjoy all the park has to offer.
