It is easy to miss Sublime Comporta, set back as it is from the road amongst peaceful swathes of pine trees. Yet this hidden gem with its stylish rooms and relaxed atmosphere is not to be overlooked. Opened in 2014, the hotel has already become a firm favorite among those looking to escape the more crowded beach destinations of the south coast. It's not hard to see why; this undiscovered part of Portugal is home to 30 miles of unspoiled white sandy beaches, yet is just over an hour's drive from Lisbon.
Surrounded by 42 acres of pine and cork tree forest, Sublime Comporta's 34 rooms are spread across the property, each one featuring a private terrace. The decor is all-white minimalist but warmed with natural wood furniture and comfortable linens. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the natural light and beautiful setting. The newly introduced luxury cabanas offer fully detached 2 bedroomed accommodation, each with a private pool, ideal for families.
The restaurant and bar is a focal point of the hotel and again high windows place the wooded landscape center-stage. The hotel's own organic garden provides the inspiration for most dishes, along with the fresh catch of the day from the local fisherman. Next to the restaurant a delightful terrace is perfect for sunny days and balmy evenings, while at night torches line the garden creating a magical atmosphere.
The hotel's spa is tucked below the restaurant but still with lots of natural light. The small indoor pool is surrounded by individual sleep pods, perfect for relaxing after your treatment or whiling away a quiet afternoon.
As the hotel is set by itself a hire car is recommended, however you have much to explore in just a short drive. The beaches of Pego and Carvalhal are only five minutes' drive from the hotel, while the expansive sands of Comporta are also well worth a visit.
The 14 standard rooms are spread out across the main building and the annex, which is about 20 meters away. All have private terraces. The decor is all-white minimalist but warmed with natural wood furniture and comfortable linens. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the natural light and beautiful setting.
The hotel now also boasts 20 fully detached 2 bedroom luxury cabanas which are fully serviced by the hotel and ideal for families.
Children are welcome at the Sublime Comporta, although outside of the main summer season the property is more suited towards couples. The luxury cabanas have 2 separate bedrooms and are ideal if you are traveling as a family.
The property offers a kids club and a children's swimming pool during the main summer months, babysitters can be arranged on request but note that no baby cots are available.
The restaurant is the center piece of the hotel, with high windows making the most of the lovely view over the pool and pine forest beyond. The head chef David João creates innovative Portuguese dishes, many of which focus on ingredients from the hotel's own organic garden or the local fishermen's catch. Start the day with a delicious continental breakfast featuring home-made bread, regional cheeses and cured ham with fresh fruit platters. Lunch is a light affair with a menu of salads, soups and sandwiches, while dinner features a five-course tasting menu, paired with regional wines (or you can choose to dine a la carte).
This is a beach-lover's paradise, with some of Portugal's best beaches within easy reach by car. Carvalhal and Pego are less than a ten-minute drive from the hotel, while Comporta and Soltroia beaches are about 20 minutes away. Activities in the local area include surfing, horse riding, cycling (the hotel has bicycles you can borrow) and bird watching in Estuário nature reserve. It is also possible to do cooking classes at the hotel and Troia's golf course is just 28km away.
There are two swimming pools: a small indoor pool within the spa and a larger outdoor pool, which is overlooked by the restaurant. Both are solar heated. The spa uses natural products from The Organic Pharmacy and offers treatments ranging from massages to aromatherapy. The hotel's signature treatment uses local ingredients such as rice and salt, along with herbs from the organic garden.
An outdoor wooden pavilion is available for a relaxing al-fresco massage or private yoga lesson.

When to go
The south of Portugal has a mild climate with more that 300 days of sunshine a year. The weather generally warm and sunny in May with the risk of the odd shower of rain. Sometimes it can be cool in the evenings. By June the weather generally settles in a pattern of long hot sunny days and balmy evenings especially in July and August. Rain is unlikely but it can happen from time to time. Throughout the summer months it can be windy especially during the afternoon. June and September are particularly pleasurable months.
