Casa de Calcada is located in charming Amarante which is full of natural treasures for you to discover and historical sites to visit. The hotel itself is brimming with history. It was built in the 16th century and has since been used as a palace, a house for allied forces and as a meeting place for political and intellectual figures before becoming the acclaimed Relais and Chateaux Hotel it is today. The grounds are majestic, the scenery breathtaking, the service is flawless and the décor elegant – Casa de Calcada will not disappoint.
The hotel has a fine terrace overlooking the river, providing an ideal spot for afternoon tea or an early evening drink. The hotel backs onto a steep hill where you will find the inviting pool nestled in a garden which is accessed from the fourth floor. Above the garden and further back is the picturesque vineyard. The common areas of the hotel all elegantly decorated with dark wood.
Amarante is located between Oporto City and the Douro Valley. Amarante is a quiet village with some beautiful churches, interesting museums and quaint streets. If you are after some more liveliness, Porto is only a bus ride away and the fascinating and stunning vineyards of Douro Valley are all easily accessible.
The rooms at Casa de Calcada are spacious and offer a variety of views. The hotel is home to the Michelin-starred restaurant Largo Do Paco, renowned for its excellent quality of food for a reasonable price. Here, you can tuck into a delicious lunch or dinner. A tasty breakfast is also served for guests in the majestic dining room.
Casa da Calcada has a total of 30 rooms and suites. There are double and twin rooms available and two types of suites. Although each room is different, their décor follows a similar pattern with their warm paint pallets. They are all decorated with an elegant, classic and romantic style. The bathrooms have a marble interior and are also spacious. The rooms all feature air-conditioning, TV, telephone, hairdryer, a minibar and wireless internet. Bathrobes and slippers are provided.
The Executive Rooms are available with either a double bed or two single beds. These 20 square meter rooms are elegantly decorated in the classic, romantic style, with fully equipped bathrooms with marble features.
The elegantly decorated 40 square meter Executive Suite has fabulous views over the Tâmega river and the historic center of Amarante. The suite also features a fully equipped marble bathroom.
The Presidential Suite of the Casa da Calcada can sleep up to 2 adults and 2 children. This elegantly decorated suite has 80 meters of space, featuring a spacious living room and a balcony with beautiful views of the Tâmega river and the city's old town. There are two marble bathrooms along with a dressing room, desk and option for an extra bed.
Luxury Rooms are available with either a double bed or two single beds. The rooms are decorated in the romantic style so typical of the hotel with beautiful views to the historic center of Amarante and the Tâmega river. The rooms also feature a marble bathroom.

Largo Do Paco is the hotel's Michelin starred restaurant. The restaurant has a cosy atmosphere and a fantastic team of staff ready to assist you in any way they can. The menu at Largo Do Paco mostly derives from Portuguese roots. Typical flavors and fresh ingredients create traditional yet sophisticated dishes to satisfy your palate.
The Spa Room at Casa da Calcada aims to provide guests with a more equal balance between body and mind. A range of treatments and the use of SPA products will leave you feeling well rested yet rejuvenated.

There is a wonderful bicycle path stretching more that 9 kilometers which is a fantastic way to take in some of the local scenery. The hotel has its own mountain golf course, one of the best in Portugal. Many golfers visit the area to enjoy this course and several others which are within easy reach. Tee times at several courses can be booked on a preferential basis from Casa de Calcada.

When to go
Casa da Calcada is an all year round destination. The Douro has a micro-climate, which massively boosts the quality and style of its wines, and on average, temperatures are higher than in Porto, and rainfall is less. Spring and autumn are the most popular times to go - April-June and September-October.
