On a white out day visit the nearby town of Pré Saint Didier in the Aosta Valley and immerse yourself in the warm waters of their thermal baths. The source of the naturally warm waters spurt from the heart of a nearby ravine, just as they did 1000 years ago!

Understated and friendly, La Thuile is a resort of two halves. The old village, originally a mining town is a charming collection of chalets, and the new, purpose built resort with its modern lift systems taking skiers to 160km of slopes. There’s a good mix of nursery slopes, easy blues, challenging intermediate terrain and tricky blacks through the trees, and with links to La Rosière in France, and close to Courmayeur and Chamonix, the Espace Bernardo hits the button for those who want to venture further afield. The slopes are relatively uncrowded, and the mountains dotted with great value restaurants serving incredible food, and with easy transfers from Geneva and Italian airports, it works for families and short breaks.

Now, the luxury hotel brand Nira has arrived with its latest impressive offering, the Nira Montana. Elegantly styled, with nature featuring heavily in every design detail, from the silver birch wall paper to the wooden furniture, it's a comfortable haven for skiers and non-skiers alike. The large lobby with its open fire, library and bar welcome skiers at the end of the day, and the huge terrace overlooking the Alps is a perfect lunch or hot chocolate stop. The rooms and suites are spacious and all have unrestricted views of the surrounding mountains. Stars Restaurant serves delicious, seasonal Italian food, focusing on regional specialties, and it's essential you try a pizza for lunch from the wood burning oven brought all the way from Florence. The hotel is particularly proud of its wine cellar, stocked with a healthy selection of vintage, local and international wines. The Spa is definitely worth a visit, with its range of holistic treatments, and comes with an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam bath, vitarium and Technogym.

For those seeking a refined resort and a luxurious hotel, La Thuile and the Nira Montana are the perfect mix. With east facing slopes meaning excellent snow conditions and rarely ever a queue to the lift, you'll want to ski all day. But once you've taken off your skis, returning to the Nira Montana is a joy.

The Nira Montana's room and suites are spacious and comfortable, all with views of the mountains. They combine traditional features with modern features and all have high quality Hästens beds. All of them have a flat screen TV, iPod docking station, WiFi, tea making facilities and a minibar, and the bathrooms have walk-in rain showers.

With 160km of ski slopes and a range of nursery, intermediate and advanced runs, La Thuile offers open-space skiing on uncrowded slopes amid picturesque scenery. Espace San Bernardo, covering 80 pistes in France and Italy, links the French resort of La Rosière with La Thuile. One single international pass provides access to 38 efficient lifts carrying up to 58,000 people per hour. Skiing either side of the French and Italian borders, in the silent presence of Mont Blanc and Rutor glacier, is a breathtaking experience. Unusually, thanks to La Thuile’s state-of-the art lifts, skiers and snowboarders rarely encounter queues. The ski runs leave from an altitude of 1,450m in La Thuile, not far from Nira Montana, and reach over 2,600m in an area known as Belvedere. Run number 3 is a challenging black 73% gradient piste dedicated to Franco Berthod, an exceptional skier and coach born in La Thuile who made downhill skiing history. This run is approved for World Cup competitions.

Nordic skiing, heliskiing, free-riding and snow-kiting are popular around La Thuile and there are many opportunities for winter walks and guided snowshoe excursions.

Location & Directions

La Thuile, Italy

The Nira Montana is on the edge of La Thuile, in the north west of the Aoste Valley in Italy. It's close to Courmayeur and the Italian / French border, with links to La Rosiere in France. An international ski pass covers both ski areas. The hotel is 300 meters from the slopes, with a complimentary shuttle taking skiers directly there.

When to go

The ski season in La Thuile follows a similar pattern to the nearby resorts of Val d'Isère and Chamonix. Its north-facing slopes means that snow quality can sometimes be better than in neighboring resort of La Rosière late in the season. There are extensive snow making facilities to ensure reliable snow cover throughout the season from December to early April.
