Insider's View

The garden view rooms are a great option for the summer when the waterfront becomes quite lively - the views are so pretty overlooking the white houses with colorful shutters and terracotta tiled roofs of the village.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel is steeped in history. The hotel was built in 1914 by Sotirios Anargiros, a shipping heir and philanthropist who ploughed his life savings into the improvement of the island. After finishing the hotel, Anargiros projects included planting the hillsides with pine trees to conserve the natural habitat and building a boarding school that edified youngsters from 1927 until 1983.

Today the hotel is a magnet for jet-setters and romantics who come to enjoy the old world charm of Spetses, with its cobbled streets, horse drawn carriages and historic old port. As a local land mark for nearly a century, Poseidonion Grand Hotel has pride of place next to the main square with stunning views across the sea to the Peloponnese.

The architecture of the hotel echoes the style of the grandes dames of the Cote D'Azur, with beautiful high ceilings and large windows which make the most of the spectacular view. Poseidonion has since been lovingly renovated, transforming it into one the region's most elegant and contemporary hotels.

Rooms and suites are split between two buildings and most have private gardens or balconies with sea views. The Royal Suite, featuring three double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and its own 85 square meter private terrace with breathtaking sea views, is particularly spectacular. For honeymooners and couples, the split-level La Cupola suite has a private setting at the top of the hotel, with a unique roof made from an upturned ship.

The main pool is surrounded by lavender blossoms and smart teak decking. A small plunge pool can also be found in the second building and makes an ideal spot for sun worshippers. Set among landscaped gardens, the spa offers a range of indulges including massages, facials and body treatments in tranquil and elegant surroundings.

Although Spetses has a jet-set heritage, the island remains largely untouched by development, with the most viable means of transport still being the horse drawn carriage. Traditional Greek tavernas and small sandy beaches are dotted along the waterfront in the port town of Dapia, while boutiques and curiosity shops line the cobbled streets. One of the best ways to start and end the day is on the hotel's own terrace, where food and drinks are served overlooking the turquoise waters of the Aegean.

The hotel features 45 premium rooms and eight suites, all furbished to reflect a contemporary earth color palette and natural tones furnishings with state of the art technology. All rooms feature spacious bathrooms with either rain head showers or retro style bath tubs. Superior rooms have either a terrace or garden patio, while deluxe rooms and suites feature private balconies.

Children are welcome in the restaurants, where highchairs are provided and staff will warm up baby food. Babysitting is available on request. Family Suites are available with cots free for under 4s and discounted extra bed rates for under 12s.

Poseidonion has two restaurants as well as a library bar and lounge cafe offering all day dining and located in the historic building overlooking the sea and port. Aneton on the Verandah serves creative Greek cuisine on a spacious terrace on the front side of the historic building. Freud oriental offers Japanese oriental cuisine, served on a verandah surrounded by the palm trees. Room service and picnic lunch boxes are available on request.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel offers a range of activities including hiking excursions and horse riding in the pine-covered hillsides of Spetses, mountain biking, boat rental and horse drawn carriage rides. There is also a PADI diving and watersports center locally.

The climate in Greece is warm and sunny for the majority of the year with the risk of the odd shower of rain and some cooler periods over the winter. From April/May onwards the weather settles but it can sometimes be cool in the evenings. By mid/end of May, the weather generally settles in a pattern of long hot sunny days and balmy evenings especially in July and August when it can be very hot. Rain is unlikely but it can happen from time to time. May to October are particularly pleasurable months.
