Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Val d’Isère boasts one of the longest ski seasons in the world because, unlike other resorts above 1800m, 80% of the skiing happens above 2000 metres. As a result, early and late season offer reliable great conditions. Being high, it is cold though and we think March and April are the best times to visit Val.

Insider's View

For little children, ski school in the afternoon is ideal - warmer, quieter and softer snow - and cheaper!

Enjoy the stunning views of the Solaise mountain from the terrace off Mathilda’s living room.

Enjoy canapés and a glass of Champagne around the fire

However much you eat at lunch, the smell of the chefs cooking greeting you when returning to the chalet is sure to make your stomach rumble!

Val's bakery is among the best in France. If you have a sweet tooth, you will be in heaven

Eating out in Val is variable but Le Lodge is ever reliable and good value - the lamb shank is the best I have tasted

Best time to tackle the might of La Face is mid-morning when the snow has softened up

Non-skiers should head up the Solaise for a walk in the sunshine around Le Lac, the best part is the chairlift down – don’t forget your camera!

New Year in Val d’Isere is an exciting, colourful and merry time in resort. The village is adorned with Christmas lights and huge ice sculptures. Be in the thick of the celebrations at Perdrix Blanche which is fantastic for big groups and offers a wide selection of cuisine from Savoyard to sushi.

The 'OK' piste was named after Henri Oreiller and Jean Claude Killy. Although neither were born in Val d'Isere, they were brought up and based there. Killy won three gold medals at the Grenoble Olympics of 1968, while Oreiller won two golds at St Moritz 20 years previously.

Challenge yourself to ski the Espace Killy - start at Le Fornet and take in all areas including the Grande Motte, finishing the day off in Tignes le Brevieres at the L’Armailly.

Val d’Isère is a mecca for downhill skiing for good reason. It has enough to keep skiers of all standards challenged and entertained for a lifetime, let alone a week. The off piste potential is limitless and the snow record enviable.

Val d'Isère has plenty to offer less enthusiastic skiers too. The Centre Aquasportif has fantastic facilities including 2 swimming pools, climbing wall, multi activity sports hall, fitness suite, gym, squash courts and a Wellness area with sauna, steam bath, spa, cold baths and hydro-massage.

Designated walking trails are a great way of appreciating the scenery and there is an ice rink, husky riding, parapenting, skidooing, cross country skiing and much more.

There is a wealth of quality restaurants in the village and on the mountain (many of which are accessible to non skiers). The shops and galleries offer some great shopping (both the window and the real varieties).
