Description

Of the many islands that dot the Dalmatian coastline, Korcula is certainly one of the most scenic, with crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, pine-clad hillsides and sun-bleached buildings steeped in history. According to legend, the island was founded by Trojan hero Antenor in the 12th century BC. Even today, the gentle pace of life and historic architecture feels like stepping back in time.

Lesic Dimitri Palace is a hidden gem set among the winding alleyways, terracotta-tiled houses and tiny churches of Korcula's Old Town, next door to Marco Polo's residence. Restored over five years from its original incarnation as the Bishop's Palace, the architects took inspiration from the great explorer's journeys along the Silk Road, which are reputed to have started in Korcula. Each of the five residences is themed by destination to reflect these travels: India, China, Venice, Ceylon and Arabia. They range from one to three bedrooms and each one has a fully fitted kitchen for self-catering or private dining by one of the hotel's excellent chefs.

The hotel's restaurant, LD Terrrace, is housed in the oldest part of the hotel and celebrates the local dishes of the region. There is also a beautifully equipped spa, with treatments influenced by the Silk Road, Thailand and the Mediterranean and products featuring herbs and flowers organically grown in Dalmatia.

Although Lesic Dimitri is more of a collection of boutique residences than a hotel there is a full concierge service available. Highly recommended, is a tour of the Old Town with the hotel's owner, Toni, who is a wealth of information on the island's history. A visit to one of the local vineyards to sample the produce of the region is also a wonderful way to while away an afternoon.

Accommodation

Lesic Dimitri Palace is a collection of five self-contained residences, each uniquely designed and with its own kitchen facilities. The eye-catching Venice residence has a striking decor and spacious living area with a hidden terrace, perfect for relaxing. It is the largest of the residences, with three bedrooms laid out over 120 square meters. The one bedroom Arabia is the most intimate, with white linen furnishings and a bath in the bedroom. Ceylon (one bedroom) and India (two bedrooms) are located on the ground floor but feel surprisingly spacious, with tasteful wooden furniture and white walls offsetting the original stone work. China, with two bedrooms, has a vibrant living area decorated with rich reds and dark wood, with a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea.

Venice Residence

Luxurious residence covering 120 square meters, decorated in beautiful Venetian style. All three bedrooms have en suite bathing facilities with king sized beds and plasma TVs in each room. All beds can be split to create twin-sleeping arrangements.

The 120m2 piano nobile (meaning noble floor) with its high, stained-red ceilings is as impressive as it would have been three centuries ago and a private balcony encased in ornate carved wood extends this wonderfully spacious living area.

India Residence

Spacious residence covering 115 square meters. This beautiful residence on the ground floor of the Palace offers enchanting accommodation with two beautiful bedrooms with oversized bathtubs in each one. The separate living and dining rooms are perfect for quiet relaxation or entertaining larger groups. Gentle influences from South Asia are apparent in the rich fabrics, marble and stone.

A private courtyard provides an enchanting haven. Escape from the heat of the island for private relaxation within the heart of the town.

China Residence

Covering 113 square meters this opulently designed Asian style residence comes complete with a vast bathroom with an enormous bathtub central to the room.

The residence also boasts a beautiful terrace with stunning views over the Croatian scenery.

Arabia Residence

This incredible suite covers 103 square feet and is decorated in beautiful Arabic style.

It has breathtaking and unparalleled 360-degree views of the Pelješac channel, Korcula archipelago, rooftops and Mount Ilija. Cool and relaxing open-plan living provides an atmosphere of romance and luxury.

Ceylon Residence

Ceylon residence is on the street level, located under the vaulted ceilings of an original medieval cottage. Intricate detailing and wonderful use of light and textiles give hints of South Asia, but within a Korculan context.

Childcare

Children are welcome but the layout of the hotel means it is not suited for toddlers or very young children. Cots are provided free of charge and older children would enjoy the hotel's unique design.

Facilities

The hotel's restaurant, LD Terrace, features a 900-year-old olive press and smoking room, befitting of its location in the oldest part of the building. The menu is typically Croatian but with a modern take on more traditional recipes. Croatia's wines are becoming increasingly popular and the hotel's sommelier is always happy to recommend the local Dalmatian varieties.

Activities

Korcula offers several wonderful sandy beaches close to the medieval walls of the Old Town. Some of the best are located in nearby Lumbarda, including Vela Przina, Bilin Zal and Tatinja. You can also explore the nearby islands by boat or take a wine tasting tour - the hotel's owner, a former opera singer, is a big proponent of the local varieties and leads these tours personally.
