Description

Gidleigh Park was originally built in the Arts and Crafts period when traditional craftsmanship in medieval, romantic or folk style was fashionable. In 1977 it first became a country house hotel and was bought and renovated in 2005 by Andrew and Christina Brownsword who had spent many peaceful breaks at Gidleigh Park. With its magnificent oak staircase and 1920s style furniture, Gidleigh Park is a beautifully appointed retreat with an unpretentious and caring approach to hospitality to make your stay as relaxing and comfortable as possible.

There are 24 rooms to choose from at Gidleigh Park, all catering for varying guests, and offering features that appeal to different parties. There is a room with easier access for those with a disability, suites which are ideal for families, rooms with built-in spa facilities for a wonderfully relaxing break and canine-friendly options. Regardless of your preferred choice, all accommodation is beautifully furnished with distinctive antiques and pictures, superb amenities and views across the surrounding landscape. It is also possible to have exclusive use of Gidleigh Park for a country house party of between 32 and 50 guests for a special occasion where you will have the luxury to explore the estate to yourselves.

The head chef at Gidleigh Park, Michael Wignall, is an AA five-rosette chef, whose complex but approachable food will be a true highlight of your stay. The wine cellar at Gidleigh Park houses 13,000 bottles and is one of the finest in the country - if arranged prior to your stay, a personal visit can be arranged. Gidleigh Park is all about comfort and making you feel at home, and guests are encouraged to visit The Pantry whenever they wish for tea, coffee, fruit, yogurt and milk, perfect for a small snack or beverage at any time of day or night.

The magical landscapes that surround the hotel are begging to be explored. Start and end your strolls in the boot room at Gidleigh and explore the walker's paradise of Dartmoor. For those who prefer a day of fishing, the River Teign can be fished for wild brown trout, sea trout and salmon, and on prior arrangement Gidleigh will provide guests with tackle, licences, tuition and a ghillie to guide you to the best waters.

When to go

It is very difficult to predict the weather in the United Kingdom - in the summer from May to late September is generally seen as the most pleasant time to visit. Rainfall is difficult to predict - but the UK does not receive as much as many are led to believe! In the winters, temperatures do fall, but there is nothing better than finding a remote pub with a roaring fire to sit beside after a long walk in the country.
