Stockholm's first boutique hotel, the Rival is located in the chic residential district of Södermalm and is surrounded by the areas bohemian bars, restaurants and boutiques.
The Rival Hotel, once a cinema, was extensively renovated 10 years ago but the unique architecture still remains in the open foyers, the wide staircases and elegant banisters. The cinema theme is continued throughout the cocktail bar and bistro restaurant which is decorated with reams of red velvet and walls papered with a mosaic of international film stars. The Rival's bistro is frequented by locals as much as hotel guests thanks to the delicious Swedish and international fare, not to mention the infamous Sunday brunch. There is also a small café which offers delicious Italian food as well as pastries freshly baked on site in the hotel's bakery. The atmosphere is relaxed and familiar with the walls adorned with photographs of well-known local personalities.
Each of Rival’s 99 rooms and suites are colorfully designed in Scandinavian Art Deco style and a hint of cinema which comes in the form of either a cinematic photograph or an ABBA print mounted above the bed and bordered by velvet curtains.
The suites and deluxe rooms all have huge glass windows offering views over Maria Square while the superior and standard rooms overlook the quiet courtyard or the resident rooftops.
The Rival Hotel is the perfect base from which to immerse yourself in Stockholm's trendiest district and explore the charming and unique boutiques that are brimming with fashion, design and vintage merchandise.
The 99 rooms and suites at Rival Hotel are well-appointed and are in keeping with the cinematic theme of the rest of the hotel. They are very art deco with large pieces of art on the wall and splashes of color. They are of course equipped with the latest technology to include Wi-Fi and complimentary movies for you to watch to your heart's content.
The Bistro at Rival Hotel serves classic Swedish and international favorites using locally sourced ingredients where possible. The funky décor of red velvet and soft lighting provides a fun dining atmosphere. The hotel is renowned for its Sunday brunch, a must if you are there over a weekend. Healthy and delicious unhealthier options are on offer to include the traditional pancakes and fried breakfast to the lesser known dishes such as steak tartar with egg yolk. Café Rival has a more casual atmosphere where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner.

When to go
Stockholm is a year round destination but is at its best in spring, summer and December. From May to September temperatures are warm, early twenties but in the height of summer can reach up to 30 degrees and the sun doesn't set until around 10:30pm, rising at around 3:00am so you can really pack a lot in! During the winter temperatures do get cold but it is a great place to go for a pre-Christmas getaway.
