In 1939 Hotell Fjället first opened its doors. Kåppas Cabin Village was added in 1971 & in 2012 came the luxurious Solhyllan cabins. All three together form Björkliden Mountain Resort, a myriad of accommodation choices nestled in the majestic mountains.
A trip North to Swedish Lapland's superb ski resort Björkliden won't disappoint. With a choice of three accommodation options - Hotell Fjället, Kåppas Cabin Village or the newly built log cabins Solhyllan you are spoiled for choice. And that is before you even consider the winter activity list or the chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis!
The cosy 4-5 bed options in Kåppas Cabin Village will suit families and couples alike. Newly renovated they are very comfortable with a kitchen, living room, shower and WC and some have a sauna. They also claim a ski in ski out position which at the end of a long day on the slopes is very welcome.
The cabins are offered on a self-catered basis but we would recommend upgrading to having your beds made and your final clean done for you. And also booking breakfast means less hassle in the mornings so you can make the most of your days in this winter wonderland.
A wide range of amazing winter activities are possible from your doorstep including snow-mobiling, husky sledding, on piste and heli-skiing and snow-shoeing. Not to mention the tantalising prospect of seeing the incredible Northern Lights.
While staying in one of the cabins, consider a truly unusual overnight trip to Sweden's highest mountain lodge, Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge. The lodge is located 9 km further up the mountain from Björkliden so bedding down here really means you will sleep in the midst of the wilderness. Enjoy a sauna, gourmet food and a glowing fire in this mountain retreat. And of course you will be hard pressed to find somewhere as perfectly placed for Northern Lights viewing, with light pollution almost negligible.
Kåppas Cabin Village is part of the larger Björkliden resort and boasts incredible views of the mountains. The cabins are ski in/ski out and feature four to five beds in two bedrooms, as well as a living room with a kitchen and a shower and WC, with most offering a sauna.
Björkliden Mountain Resort attracts families every winter for skiing and winter activities and Hotel Fjället has its own inviting playroom for the little ones. Babysitting is available on request and ski kindergarten is bookable too.
The hotel's own Restaurant Lapporten serves up excellent fare made using locally sourced produce as far as possible and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Near the ski lifts is the Snöbaren open-air café where you can indulge in Swedish fika (coffee and cake) with the freshest cinnamon buns or the ever popular grilled hotdogs on offer.
Where to start? Björkliden is of course knows for its skiing having hosted the Swedish Championship in alpine skiing in 2010. The region around Björkliden has Scandinavia's best ski touring with more than 60 peaks ranging from easy orange touring to jet black alpine skiing expeditions and heli-skiing possibilities out the Alps in the shade.
Husky sledding, snow-mobiling and Northern Lights tour are all possible. In fact you can even combine them! Snow-shoeing and even snow golf are on offer. Another trip worth considering is the one to Kåppasjåkka cave, one of Sweden's longest cave systems adorned with 1000'2 of stalagmites and stalactites.
