The Igloo Hotel is situated in Sorrisniva 20-kilometers from Alta town center in idyllic surroundings on the banks of the Alta River. The hotel measures approx 2000 square meters, and the entire exterior and interior is made of snow and ice; the rooms, the beds, even the glasses in the icebar. Apart from its 25 bedrooms, the Igloo Hotel houses suites, a bar and several lounges. The hotel is decorated with ice sculptures which are exquisite works of art. The changing themes every year ensure a unique experience.
The service building next to the igloo hotel contains a luggage room where your bags are stored safely during your stay. The rooms in the hotel contain only your beds, while other facilities like toilets, changing rooms, showers and sauna are in the warm service building to ensure your comfort. The sauna is heated every morning at 7am. In the evening, you can enjoy dinner in one of the two restaurants.
The Igloo hotel has 20-30 rooms and suites (it varies from year to year). Some of the rooms are decorated with sculptures made of ice and snow. There is currently no warm accommodation at the Igloo hotel.
The Laksestua restaurant is a beautiful wooden building shaped like a Sami lavvo (tent) with an open fireplace in the middle. The restaurant is supervised by one of Norway's finest chefs. A mel here is an experience to remember and highly recommended. The menu is of course based on local ingredients and the food is locally sourced, so you can try lappish specialties like reindeer and salmon from the Alta river.
A range of fun activities is on offer at Sorrisniva.
Snowmobile safaris are extremely popular: the necessary equipment and clothing is provided before you head into the forest and up onto the Finnmark plateau, with its wide, white snow-covered plain. In the daytime the view is magnificent and at night you have a good chance of seeing the elusive Northern Lights!
The nearby Northern Lights Husky Farm offers dog-sled safaris in cooperation with Sorrisniva. Here you will meet Trine, a dog sled racing champion, and her dogs. Drive their own sleigh along part of the route of the famous Finmark race, or just be a passenger. There is no better way to experience the Alta Canyon and the Northern Lights.
Location & Directions
Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is located on the shores of the Alta River, 25 minutes drive from the domestic airport at Alta.
When to go
As construction of the hotel is subject to the whims of Mother Nature, an exact time frame cannot be guaranteed, but the Ice Hotel usually remains open to guests from January through to April when the hotel closes to allow the thaw back into the Alta river. Sorrisniva accepts both overnight guests and visitors between 10am - 6pm each day during this period.
With the recent addition of the Ice Hotel's little sister which houses three art suites and an ice bar, you can also experience the feeling of sleeping on ice during the summer months, albeit on a much more modest scale. The summer season usually starts at the beginning of June and lasts until the end of August.
