Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

It is very difficult to predict the weather in Ireland - in the summer from May to late September is generally seen as the most pleasant time to visit. Rainfall is difficult to predict - but Ireland does not receive as much as many are led to believe! In the winters, temperatures do fall, but there is nothing better than finding a remote pub with a roaring fire to sit beside after a long walk in the country.

Description

A refined beauty surrounded by the rugged countryside of Donegal, Lough Eske Castle lies tucked away in 40-acres of ancient woodlands and picturesque gardens. With beautiful landscapes on its doorstep it is an eminently welcoming country retreat.

This grand estate nestles at the heart of Donegal’s cragged hills, the wild Atlantic crashes at the nearby sea cliffs of Slieve League, and all around the raw natural beauty of the hills beckons. After a day exploring the wildernesses of Donegal, there are few better places to retreat to than one of Lough Eske’s cosy armchairs, curled up in front of a roaring fire.

The 96 Rooms and Suites of Lough Eske Castle reflect the baronial, stately heritage of the building, with heavy drapes, brocade fabrics and classic furniture, while neutral tones and crisp white bed linens add a modern edge. Large windows flood the rooms with light and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Marble bathrooms come complete with double vanity units and separate bath and shower, while luxury robes and slippers add an extra layer of comfort.

Meals at Lough Eske reflect the landscape of Donegal, taking the local and sustainable produce of the region and adding a hint of refined elegance to create delicious dishes. Enjoy fine dining at Cedars, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and terrace opening onto panoramic views of the gardens and woodland and retire to a cosy leather armchair in the Oak Bar, ideal for sitting back with a whisky to while away an evening. Afternoon tea is an occasion to savour, while a pint of Guinness or a light bistro style meal can be enjoyed in the Gallery Bar and Lobby Lounge.

The CARA Organic Beauty Spa is a luxurious escape, with a serene atmosphere that flows through the seven treatment rooms, pool, and fully equipped thermal suite with ice fountain, sauna, steam room, tropical experience showers and heated bench.

Though the spa, superb dining options and expansive estate grounds make Lough Eske Castle a destination in itself, it lies at the heart of some of Donegal’s most spectacular landscapes. A 45-minute drive brings you to Slieve League, the highest marine cliffs in Europe, while the rugged hills of the Glenveagh National Park are home to the recently reintroduced Golden Eagle. Hill walking, horseback riding and fishing take you deep into this remote wilderness.
