Nordic climate - May, June and July are the driest months of the year. Mid-June to August is high season, but most highland tours don’t operate until July because of snow. At other times, many tourist facilities outside Reykjavík are closed. From September through March, the night is dark enough to see the Aurora Borealis.

To start planning your holiday to Apotek Hotel

Located in the heart of Reykjavik, on the square just behind Iceland's Parliament, the Hotel Apotek is one of the newest hotels in the city and housed in a 1917 landmark building which was formerly the city's biggest pharmacy, Reykjavikurapotek.

Apotek Hotel is perfectly placed on Austurvollur square, near the Icelandic parliament building in the heart of the city and within very easy walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants.

The 4 star hotel has 45 rooms and suites which are all designed in-keeping with the Art Deco theme of its sister hotel, Hotel Borg also designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the State Architect of Iceland at the time. All have lovely parquet floors, chic grey walls and bright bathrooms with walk-in showers. In many of the rooms you can still see some of the historical buildings original features and most have views of the square and Parliament building.

The hotel's restaurant and bar, Apotek Grill is beautifully lit and has an inviting atmosphere, comfortable and cosy seating and delicious grilled meats and fish make it the perfect place to warm up and relax after a stroll around the city in winter. The menu is an exciting blend of Icelandic and European dishes but also a "smoking hot Argentinean grill". All tastes are catered for at Apotek, the bar being no exception, offering artisan cocktails mixed by award winning "pharmacists".

The bar at the Apotek attracts the locals and therefore has a vibrant and lively feel. Rooms are stylish and plush with lovely bathrooms (showers only) and most have great views over the square. This hotel is a great option for couples or families and is based very close to the harbour and all of the restaurants and shops in the city.

I visited the Apotek Hotel when it had just opened its doors. The design had an Art Deco feel to it which you can see in the other higher end hotels of Reykjavik. The parquet floors were lovely and brought a warmth to the hotel; bathrooms were wonderfully bright though it is a shame none of the rooms have baths which is all you want in winter! The Apotek Grill was so nice, the lighting was so warm and cosy and the food was delicious. Great value.
