To start planning your vacation to The Sounds Retreat
The Sounds Retreat is a stylish and romantic escape, located high on the hill at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound. The views are spectacular and you have them all to yourselves – there is just one suite here, ensuring total seclusion and privacy. The only luxury lodge with road access in the area, it offers the best of both worlds, with all of the water-based activities such as kayaking and boat trips exploring the Marlborough Sounds, hiking on the Queen Charlotte Track, and explorations further afield – the wine region of Blenheim is just half an hour’s drive away.
The modern suite is excellently appointed with everything you have at home, and probably more. There’s a lounge area with wifi, an Apple TV, iPod docking station, Nespresso coffee machine, minibar stocked with local wines and vast ensuite bathroom with underfloor heating, bathtub and walk-in shower. The front of the room is all floor-to-ceiling glass, opening out onto a multi level deck with armchairs where you can sit and soak up the views, glass of wine in hand, or unwind in the hot tub.
Breakfasts and sumptuous three-course dinners are served in the cabana with glass-walls, heating and the same spectacular views down the Sound. Owners and hosts Tony and Anne are here to take care of your every need, and have thought of every tiny detail to ensure you have everything you need and more. Guests staying on the all inclusive basis have use of a Mini Cooper car during their stay, for example, and there’s a guest laundry room with washer and dryer if you’re midway through your trip. And if you’ve over indulged at dinner, you can work it off at the gym.
It’s ideal for couples looking for somewhere special, but families can also be accommodated; the sofa converts into a bed in the lounge and cots can be provided for tiny tots, too.

When to go
The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.
