South Island's Marlborough holds international acclaim for being one of the finest wine regions in the world. Built in 1901 for the Sisters of Mercy, the historic Victorian convent was originally located in Blenheim and provided nineteen bedrooms for the nuns, a library, music room sewing room, office and a beautiful chapel. In 1994 it was meticulously moved and restored in Rapaura and the downstairs interior layout remains the same as it was 100 years ago, retaining its original charm and character. Upstairs, the accommodation is the ultimate in chic boutique luxury.
Each of the five rooms and suites at Old St Mary's Covent is individually styled, with echoes of the convent's past, and all feature roll-top baths and beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards, hills and gardens. Each suite has easy access to the convent's balcony. Breakfast is served in the cosy dining room and the library is a great place for a game of billiards or to enjoy the tranquillity of a good book and a glass of wine by the fireplace.
Old St Mary's Convent is ideally situated on a 60 acre estate of vineyards and gardens near Blenheim and this area has a wealth of attractions for the lover of the great outdoors and excellent food and drink. Spring Creek meanders through the property and has an abundance of birdlife and trout - it is ideal for finding the perfect shady spot to relax and sample some of the region's fine wines and provincial gourmet food.
Great days out can be spent touring the nearby wineries, many of which have wonderful restaurants. Other activities could include walking on the Queen Charlotte track in the Marlborough Sounds, exploring the region by bike or taking in a round of golf on one of the excellent golf courses found in close proximity to the convent. Closer to home, petanque, croquet, swimming and tennis are all available to guests.
The Sister Ancilla, Novice and Grace Rooms are all beautifully furnished, spacious and have wonderful views over either the garden or the vineyard. The Mother Superior Suite has the addition of a comfortable sitting area, a two person bath and access to the convent's balcony. The Chapel (Honeymoon) Suite is situated in the original chapel and is the size of a small apartment - its antique stained glass windows, private balcony, luxurious bathroom and TV and stereo make it the convent's most indulgent room.
Children are very welcome to come and stay at Old St Mary's Convent and they will enjoy the abundant grounds including the creek and the swimming pool, but there are no specific facilities for them except for babysitting, which can be arranged on request.
Old St Mary's Convent serves a wonderful continental or cooked breakfast each morning in its cosy dining room and a glass of wine is served to guests before they depart for dinner each evening. There is a swimming pool, bicycles, petanque and croquet and guests are able to use the grass tennis courts adjacent to the property on request. Location & Directions
Blenheim, New Zealand
The Old St Mary’s Convent is set in the heart of Marlborough’s wine region, situated on Rapaura Road in an estate of 20 acres and surrounded on all sides by the vineyards and olive groves. Just a 10-minute drive from Blenheim or 20 to 25-minutes from Picton on the South Island.
When to go
The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.
