The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Matakauri Lodge is a luxury hideaway set just outside Queenstown on a hillside sloping down to Lake Wakatipu, offering stunningly designed accommodation, fine dining, superb service and incredible panoramic views of the lake and mountains.
Nestled in native bush, overlooking Lake Wakatipu on the outskirts of vibrant Queenstown, Matakauri Lodge is one of the most private and exclusive addresses in New Zealand. The lodge's communal areas are cosy and welcoming and guests can enjoy the clean crisp interiors bathed in light while reading a book in the library or curled up with a glass of wine in front of the living room's fireplace. This is contemporary casual style with a touch of glamour and the emphasis on natural materials and warm colors to reflect the lodge's majestic surrounds.
Each of Mataukari's spacious suites has its own private sitting room and garden terrace, all of which look out to the mountainous terrain beyond the stunning lake views. Suites are spacious and airy and have been cleverly designed to be simplistic, hence not detracting from the beauty outside, yet all of life's creature comforts have been attended to from the latest audio visual technology to the high quality beds, towels and linen.

Matakauri Lodge is a world-class property with arguably some of the best views in New Zealand. The property is located around a 10-minute drive outside of Queenstown town center and is therefore a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the alpine town. The hotel is located right by Queenstown's famous lake and it's safe to say that the views across Lake Wakatipu are pretty spectacular. As well as your bedroom, you get to enjoy the scenery from all around the property - the swimming pool, restaurant and even the gym! In terms of dining, the food here is probably some of the best I had throughout my stay in New Zealand, so make sure you leave plenty of space for canapes and dinner in the evening!

This lodge stole my heart. The views out across the lakes to the mountains are awe inspiring and you have them all to yourself right from your own room. Each lodge is beautifully designed and very contemporary in style, you feel at home straight away. The main dining areas feel open, light and airy whilst still be cosy and warm. The food is delicious, I had the most amazing melt-in-your-mouth steak whilst there, probably the best I've ever had. Whether you are starting or ending your trip in Queenstown, Matakauri is a must if you can fit it in!

Matakuri is a brightly colored jewel set on Wakatipu lake 10 minutes from the little South Island capital of Queenstown. Reflected in the bright lake waters is the lodge and mountains which frame the property. Walk down to the little beach and brave the fresh clear waters of the lake, take a helicopter up into the mountains and down over the Fjords to Milford and Doubtful Sound or simply sit by their pool and take in the stunning views from their deck. Immaculate rooms decorated in a bright take on the famous Virginia Fischer's taupe, beige and country house design, the oranges and fresh streaks of color are reflected in the sunset each night on the lake. The food here is extremely good and with their own unique backdrop hard to beat. A terrific spot to stop and explore the famous wineries of South Island, fly to various points and explore or take the famous Dart River jet boat through the foaming rivers. If you are needing space the Owners Cottage with its Alpine decor is stunning.

This beautiful lodge is just a 10 minute drive from the center of the vibrant town of Queenstown, yet totally tranquil, away from the hustle, bustle and noise. It is perched on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, so you can enjoy stunning views from your bedroom, the main swimming pool, hot tub and beautiful restaurant. It is a boutique option with just 12 rooms, plus the Owners Cottage and so has a totally exclusive feel, with personal 5* service and incredibly friendly staff. The gym and swimming pool are in an idyllic spot overlooking the lake and mountain range beyond. From this peaceful retreat it is hard to believe you are so close to the adventure capital of New Zealand and infamous party town. Everything is fantastically designed and furnished, with a chic and stylish finish. It is totally effortless and you cannot help but instantly relax when you are there. The evening drinks and dinner are a real highlight!

Matakauri is located just a ten minute drive for the happening Queenstown Center set on a seven mile forest reserve. Having only reopened in 2010, modern architecture and all the latest modern conveniences make it incredibly luxurious. The suites are designed to be your home from home which they certainly achieve. The villas look out over Lake Wakatipu. Their dining area, gym and pool have the most jaw droopingly beautiful views; people who dont tend to use the gym will feel they should. It really is located in such a super spot. My only reservation is the fact that although the lodge has its lake front network, the walking on offer is quite limited. You want to ensure you dont get mowed down by the mountain bikes on the tracks.

Set on the edge of a lake with stunning views of the Remarkables and the surrounding mountains, Matakauri Lodge is the newest of the holy trinity of Jay Robertson’s stunning New Zealand hotels. Sister property to The Farm at Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs, the interiors have been skilfully reworked by the gifted Virginia Fisher, one of New Zealand’s top interior designers.
Just seven minutes' drive from New Zealand’s adventure capital, the lodge is light, airy and stylish with picture windows taking full advantage of the jaw-dropping views at every opportunity. Virginia Fisher has really outdone herself here and brought the rugged landscapes and muted colors of the outdoors in, with soft and subtle furnishings and an understated, elegant feel. Each of the 11 luxurious rooms is welcoming, cosy in the winter months and light and bright in summer and ultimately a home from home. In spite of the chic and boutique nature of the property, you are overwhelmed by the need to relax and enjoy - a real kiwi attitude to life!
