Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

To start planning your holiday to Matuka Lodge

Matuka Lodge is a charming guesthouse located just outside Twizel in the Southern Alps of South Island. With just four well-appointed guest rooms, it's a peaceful retreat and great base for exploring the central lakes, Mount Cook and beyond.

Matuka Lodge offers an ideal base for exploring New Zealand's Southern Alps region, including Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook. It is a small, luxury guesthouse with just four rooms and is owner-managed by Jo and Peter who are great hosts. They can help suggest activities for exploring the area, including insider information such as neighbours who own spots which were used in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy films, which Tolkien fans can enjoy as a far more authentic visit than the more commercial tours available. The lodge is just a 40-minute drive to the vivid turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo, and 45 minutes away from Mount Cook village, both offering an abundance of exciting activities including glacier hiking, scenic helicopter flights and some of the southern hemisphere's clearest night skies for stargazing.

The guesthouse overlooks a large pond, surrounded by bullrushes, and is a haven for birdlife. Views from the terrace beyond the pond are of the mountain ranges, affording Matuka a really pretty setting. There's a large lounge area with sofas and armchairs, a help-yourself fridge with wine, tea and coffee and Jo bakes a fresh cake daily for guests. Hearty breakfasts are served each morning and set you up for your day of exploring. Dinners are not served here but guests can eat in nearby Twizel, a small town with a couple of friendly restaurants serving tasty, home-cooked food.

The rooms are light and airy, with all the modern conveniences travellers would expect, including underfloor heating in the bathrooms, fluffy bathrobes, air conditioning, TVs and WiFi throughout the property. Two rooms are slightly smaller and have a shower only, whilst the other two have a separate shower and spa bathtub. All have a terrace at the front where you can relax and soak up the views.

This is an adult-only guesthouse, with no guests under the age of 18 accommodated, so you can be assured of a peaceful environment.
