High Country heritage, magnificent horses and warm country hospitality make these trail rides one of Victoria's most enduring adventure experiences. Ride a horse as true pioneers did in the 18th century, and get a taste of the frontier lifestyle from yesteryear.
Michael Watson's family have lived on their 730 acre farm adjoining the High Country for 50 years, and he's the second generation to saddle up the horses and explore the lands of the 'Man from Snowy River'. Mike Watson is a consummate horseman, with over 60 stunning horses on their station. He is so passionate about the area and the Snowy River legend that he keeps clips of Kirk Douglas's riding sequences on his iPod.
The legendary ‘Man from Snowy River’ was Jack Riley, a cattleman who rode the High Country and inspired the celebrated poem by Banjo Paterson. This led to two movies, both filmed in this stunning region of forests, creeks and mountains.
The 2-day Luxury Horse Ride and the 5-day 'Man from Snowy River' & Heritage Ride through ‘Man from Snowy River’ country takes you right to the perilously steep hill where the nail-biting jump scene was filmed for the movie. Simple yet comfortable country-style accommodation await, alongside local and seasonal cuisine. Expert guides accompany you all the way, providing insights and history of this remarkable country. Wildlife abounds, with kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and the huge wedge tail eagle, Australia’s largest flying bird.
The horses are selected to suit the rider’s skill and level of experience for your complete riding enjoyment.
For the ultimate equestrian experience, try the 5-day High Country Cattle Drive, accompanied by Charlie Lovick, a fifth generation high country cattleman who was Master of Horses for both the 'Man from Snowy River' movies. Long days in the saddle await, along with plenty of local yarns and folklore, with hearty country food.
Simple yet comfortable country huts and homesteads
Tasty and filling home-style food is served on the rides, incorporating local and seasonal ingredients and typical Aussie fare.
