In the southern half of Australia the seasons are the opposite of those in the northern hemisphere: spring comes in September, summer is from December to February, autumn runs from March to May, and winter begins in June.

Byron Bay is in northern New South Wales and has one of the best climates in the country. Mild all year round with particular warm and dry weather between October and April although it is still possible to enjoy the outdoors in the winter months. Whale-watching season is from May to October.

Located on Australias East Coast, this once old whaling town has definitely thrown of its darker past and has transformed into a buzzing bohemian town. Byron Bay is now full of surfers, artists and others seeking the laid back lifestyle while enjoying some of Eastern Australias most spectacular beaches. This is where dolphins frolic in the surf while migratory whales breach just beyond bathing vacation makers.

A 15 minute drive from this sun lovers mecca is the wonderful Byron at Byron Bay. Set in 45 acres of rainforest, tended by national park staff, each of the resorts suites is located within forested groves, where kookaburra and cicada provide a riotous cacophony at dawn and dusk.

Each beautiful suite is cleverly designed, providing an open planned living and sleeping space that can be closed off with sliding doors for privacy when traveling with children. A gorgeous deep spa bath added a touch of romance for couples. Wonderful decked areas both front and back ensure a feeling of being close to the bountiful nature, while screens mean that none of the critters can get in. Splashes of rusty earth red and individual nature inspired art-works add to the connection with to outside, while the smell of eucalyptus wafts on the breeze.

The 25 meter infinity pool surrounded by decadent loungers and day beds, spa, gym and daily yoga mean that there is plenty to keep everyone entertained. The contemporary open-sided restaurant and bar area serves delicious cuisine and draws on local seasonal produce.

Boardwalks meander through the towering gum trees, festooned with giant bromeliads and brimming with wildlife I bumped into the odd bush turkey or two. At the far end of the resort, a path leads out past a billabong and down a sandy track to sand dunes and miles of beach buffeted by wind and waves, sculpting miles of perfectly golden sands.

Outside of the resort Byron Bay offers opportunities to get up close with some of the resident marine creatures. Here you can swim with dolphins or kayak with migrating humpback whales. Take a coastal walk along towering cliffs to Byron Bay Lighthouse Australias most easterly point then watch the waves crashing against the cliffs while pods of dolphins play in the surf.

Located about 10 minutes from the township of Byron Bay, the Byron at Byron is a peaceful, laid back gem tucked away amongst tracts of native bush and tidal pools. Byron Bay has long attracted hippies, surfers, backpackers and those looking for a slower pace of life, and the Byron at Byron combines all these sensibilities into one quintessentially Australian resort. Modern rooms nestle amongst the gum trees, and being able to open them up to the outdoors allows you to be woken by the cackling Kookaburras and squawking Cockatoos.

Being in an area that fiercely supports the local, seasonal and artisan when it comes to produce, it came as no surprise that the delicious menu was peppered with local Bangalow pork, lemon myrtle, macadamia and regional lamb, adding to the holistic Byron feel. The small spa is not to be missed, with a variety of treatments ranging from your typical massages, through to Byronian influenced facials, massages and rituals, conducted using the best organic Australian products.

Being away from the daily melee of life in town, the resort has an infectiously peaceful vibe, helped enormously by the friendly, smiling Aussie staff who go out of their way to ensure you are settling in to the Byron pace of life. Strolling along the boardwalks of the resort will uncover tidal pools and creeks, surrounded by river gums, teeming with life. And in a mere 10 minutes, you can walk through the bush to Tallow Beach, a vast swathe of golden sand south of the lighthouse, with amazing views and pounding surf.

Although the hotel is about 5 minutes drive south of Byron Bay, and it isn’t directly on the beach, I absolutely love this place. It has got a really great vibe and its setting on a lake, in a forest is very peaceful. It is just a 10 minute leisurely stroll through the trees to lovely Tallows Beach, one of Byron’s many beautiful bays. The suites are maybe a little boxy looking on the outside, but internally they are light and airy and have a large separate sitting room, making them great for families. There is also a small kitchen if you want to prepare food yourself. But to be honest I don’t know why you would as the food at the hotel is excellent, a real modern Australian & Asian fusion style of food. Or if that isn’t enough, Byron Bay has lots of great restaurants too. The hotel has picked up Byron’s alternative and laid back vibe and that combined with lots of activities such as surfing, diving and walking makes it a great destination for a break for couples or families.
