Gampola, Sri Lanka
Ellerton was built for the manager of a large tea estate more than 100 years ago. Now owned by Cary and Richard Goode, it retains the character and tranquillity of those colonial days. Perfect for a family group or a couple, and well positioned for Kandy.

Situated just north of the Hill Country and a stone's throw from Kandy, Ellerton benefits from the best of Sri Lanka's weather with warm days and relatively cool evenings, much like an English summer. Set in beautiful gardens, Ellerton comprises eight comfortable double bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, a spring fed swimming pool and wonderful views in all directions.
It has the air of a classic vacation home or guest house in Cornwall or Scotland, no fuss and very relaxed, making it ideal for young families who are looking for ease rather than necessarily overt luxury. The large sitting room is the center of the Main House; furnished with antiques it is a great place to gather before dinner or to play cards later in the evening. The dining room, used on cooler evenings or more formal dinners, seats 12 while the dining terrace set in stunning gardens should be taken advantage of as much as possible when it is warm enough to do so.
The house has three guest bedrooms, two doubles and one twin, all with their own bathrooms. The twin bedroom and one of the double bedrooms have attached rooms with a single bed which can be used as triples. Beside the swimming pool and some thirty yards away from the main house is the new Valley House. With spectacular views down the valley it has three generous bedrooms, consisting of two doubles and a twin. The double bedrooms have large bathrooms with baths and walk in showers, whilst the twin has a shower. The Valley House's huge veranda is a natural place to cool off in the shade and curl up with a book. The Garden Rooms are the newest addition to Ellerton; set just in front of the main house and commanding spectacular views of the hills, they are ideal for couples. They have their own balconies and being a bit removed from the Main House or Valley House, also have a bit more privacy. All of the rooms are simple, yet comfortable.
The two Chefs produce excellent and varied menus each day including fantastic Sri Lankan curries as well as simple English dishes for less adventurous younger pallets! This property is all about the immediate local surroundings and in particular the beautiful gardens full of interesting flowers, butterflies and birds - for some this will be a highlight.
Ellerton has eight comfortable double and twin bedrooms, some well set up for families split between the Main House and the Valley House. The Valley House rooms are newer and more modern in design and there is an extensive verandah providing welcome shade from the midday sun. The Garden Rooms are set apart from the others and have a private balconies rather than a verandah.
While there is no child care, children and families are very welcome. Children will enjoy mountain biking in the local area and a visit to the Millennium Elephant Foundation, roughly 1.5 hours away from the hotel by car.
Facilities at Ellerton include a dining terrace, swimming pool and there are mountain bikes for guests to take out and explore the stunning surroundings.
Meals are usually served in the large open sided dining pavilion with lovely views of the valley. Breakfast consists of fresh fruit, cereals and cooked breakfast. Lunch is a selection of salads, sandwiches and omelettes whilst dinner is three course affair. The two chefs are happy to adapt their dishes to your preferences.
For dinner the cost per adult is $30 for dinner, but importantly this includes cocktails before dinner; free good-quality wine, or other drinks during the meal; service charge and all taxes. We feel is extremely good value, compared to other restaurants
Explore the lush tropical landscape by foot or mountain bike, go swimming in the beautiful infinity edge pool with stunning views overlooking the jungle, or take a trip to explore some of the local destinations. Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth, the renowned Buddhist site, and the botanical gardens at Peredeniya are not to be missed either.
Ellerton is also the perfect place to relax and read a book and has an extensive collection of novels, coffee table books and guides on Sri Lanka.
Please note that due to Ellerton's location in the hills, it enjoys a more refreshing climate than the rest of the country. Therefore there is no air conditioning.

When to go
Year round destination. Because the Hill Country it so high up it rarely gets unbearably hot. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, as temperatures rise to around 28C during the day but cool down at night. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here, when there’s almost no rain at all.
