Galle Face Hotel
Colombo, Sri Lanka
We are extremely saddened by the events that took place in Sri Lanka on Sunday 21st April. We've been following the situation closely and with the recent changes in security, we're pleased to say that we can support the people of Sri Lanka and once again offer trips to this beautiful country. To encourage visitors to return, the Sri Lankan government are now offering free visas on arrival to key countries (including the US) beginning August 2019.

The Galle Face, an impressive old colonial building, situated right on the seafront, was established as a hotel in 1864. The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the commercial city and also has wonderful views of the Indian Ocean.
Set in a fantastic location in central Colombo, perfect for shopping and sightseeing, the hotel today is split into two - the Classic Wing and the newer Regency Wing which we prefer for comfort reasons.
The 82 rooms of the southern Regency Wing of the hotel have recently been refurbished and modern luxuries have been tastefully combined with the original old Victorian features. Suites include living and dining areas, and are equipped with Jacuzzis, either in-room or on the balcony overlooking the ocean.
As well as a large swimming pool, beauty salon and fitness studio, the Regency Wing has a choice of two restaurants, one of which is right on the seafront and renowned for its seafood, and the other serving international cuisine. The Galle Face Hotel spa is set among lush tropical garden overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. There is also a museum and art gallery housing the Duke of Edinburgh's first ever car. Guests may use the facilities of both parts of the hotel.
There is plenty to do in the historic city of Colombo from shopping and dining to visiting cultural sites and museums. Colombo has a wonderfully eclectic mix of architecture that spans centuries from the many colonial buildings influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch and British to structures built in Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Indian and Contemporary architectural styles.

Probably Colombo's most iconic hotel, The Galle Face hotel is a heritage property that dates back to 1864. It is ideally located on the Ocean front so guests can relax with ocean views and the sea breeze. Not far from the airport and nearby to a number of Sri Lanka's attractions it serves as the perfect start or end to a Sri Lanka vacation. Rich in history the Galle Face hotel is characterful and exudes a colonial feel with its Victorian architecture and wooden panelling. It is a larger hotel with 156 rooms separated in two wings and offers a number of facilities and restaurants to enjoy. From sunset cocktails on the veranda, to croquet on the lawn it takes you back to a bygone era of Sri Lanka's rich past.

Good hotel in spectacular location. Modernisation is still in progress, but is almost finished and, when complete, will have brought this old institution to a good modern standard whilst retaining the colonial charm of its heritage. Staff generally good, but housekeeping staff need more training – room not tidied, used dishes not cleared away.

The Regency wing was being done up for a second time when I visited this hotel. One of the best located hotels in Colombo with a wonderful beach frontage, the Galle Face Hotel is a great place to stay if you have night to kill before your flight home. The hotel was built in 1864 and is certainly showing its age. Go for the higher category rooms, such as the Balcony Suites are much more light and airy than the others.

Terribly Agatha Christie I thought! Although we suggest you stay in the Regency Wing, refurbished in 2004, the older part of the hotel makes you feel like youve stepped back in time. As they will proudly tell you, 12 years before Bell patented the telephone, Galle Face Hotel was welcoming heads of state and royalty as their guests. Its classic British Colonial design will charm anyone as obsessed with this era as I am.
