The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.
February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian vacation week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.
Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.
Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.
The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

Velassaru is a brilliant option for those wanting a luxury trip that won't break the bank. I loved the feel of this resort; their ethos is 'Luxury Undressed' which I think sums up Velassaru perfectly! It's not flashy, it's not particularly grand, but everything has been done to a really high standard, and it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into this place. The staff here are so friendly and helpful too, and really will help you get the most out of your stay.

Very much one of the more modern islands in the Maldives is a fun and social place for a trip. Guests here are from a wide range of international backgrounds and generally younger. Its also one of the more affordable options in the Maldives making it a popular choice. However I was pleased to see this doesn't mean compromises - the rooms are smart and well designed and the larger water villas in particular are very well appointed. This is a great choice if you are looking for the Maldives experience without breaking the bank and from my experience there a great place to spend a week!

We brought Velassaru in to cater for those who didn’t want to spend quite so much in The Maldives but still benefit from the fabulous Maldivian experience. The south facing side of the island (facing away from the capital) is home to fantastic public area with stylish bar and glorious pool complete with surrounding hammocks, beanbags and day beds. A great variety of dining options are on offer and a super spa and water sports center, not to mention dive center and house reef are all on offer. We prefer the newer villas, which have, be created as a result of the resort undergoing a complete makeover as they are not only in more modern and luxurious but also in better positions with better views. A great option for young couples looking for a more social resort and the lower end of the budget scale.
