Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Isolated from much of India by the Western Ghats, the climate of Kerala & Karnataka is tropical and as a result of the mountain ranges the area isn’t as dry as much of India. The best time to visit is from January through to April. While there can be the occasional light showers these are just a prelude of the wet weather to come. The weather is generally hot and humid during this early summer. The monsoon season arrives in early June and thus can wash out July and August. September is much more humid as a result of the rainy season, and the fall can be dry but with the humidity this makes it feel quite warm. There can be a little rain in the night in October and November. The temperatures cool down and the humidity lets up as winter comes in around December, with this season lasting until February when the dry spring returns. Winter can be a pleasant time to visit, especially if you’re looking to head off the beach and explore the rest of this Indian land of mystery.

Insider's View

I have never seen so many stunning butterflies as I saw in Coconut Lagoon's Butterfly Garden.

There are so many complimentary activities and experiences available here on a daily basis. You can learn how to play the Keralan Drums, watch a Keralan cultural show or walk around the marshes where you might spot some rare birds.

If you're a keen birdwatcher this is the place for you. The rear of the property is a designated bird watching area, with huts and hide-outs to sit in.

Don't miss the CGH Earth houseboat which Scott Dunn can organize for you while staying at Coconut Lagoon for an afternoon's sailing on Lake Vembanad

Pay a visit to the Butterfly Garden or go on the hotel’s organized Butterfly Garden Walk. The sheer number of butterflies here – and their size – is really incredible.

If you're looking for extra luxury, I’d recommend upgrading to a Pool Villa. You get your own private plunge pool, as well as incredible views out to the neighboring rice paddy.

Book the private pool villa to enjoy the best of Coconut Lagoon.

Enjoy the local fish cooked in banana leaf for a taste of traditional keralan food.

At sunset get a cocktail and sit on the benches on the shores of the lake to watch the sun go down in peace and quiet apart from the twittering of birds and mooing of the Vechor cow.

Coconut Lagoon is located on Vembanad Lake at Kuttanad and is based on a small island with 30 acres of land comprising the hotel and grounds as well as paddy fields. The property has 50 rooms in all but choose the private pool villas which are extremely popular and need to be booked early. They are large with views overlooking the lake and the paddy fields to the rear. They have an ayurvedic spa with an ayurvedic doctor who will give you a brief consultation prior to any treatment. There is a large restaurant with buffet and a l carte and a smaller seafood restaurant which is amazing - try the local Keralan fish cooked in banana leaf. Finally go and see the Vechhor Cow, the worlds smallest cow, which wanders round the property. Ask the naturalist to take you to the butterfly garden and point out local birds. For birdwatchers you can organize a private tour of the nearby bird sanctuary.

To access Coconut Lagoon, you have to board a boat which, in itself, is a really great experience. There's a huge amount to do at the property with plenty of onsite activities including canoeing in the canals, Kathakali shows in the evening and even coconut husking! The food here is really delicious; I ended up trying so many different Keralan dishes at their lunchtime buffet.

Gliding into Coconut Lagoon by river, straight to the reception, is a great way to arrive. This property is only accessible by boat and as such has an exclusive luxurious feel to it. With 22 acres of land and a huge proportion the property sitting on the lake bank it has a great location, but it is very large and if your looking for something personal this might not be the place for you. The pool villa's are beautiful with one side looking over the lake and the other overlooking the bird sanctury. I would not advise the Mansion rooms, however, which are built in a block and lack privacy.

Experiences

  • Backwaters - A day on a Houseboat

Enjoy this half day cruise along the backwaters. Spend the afternoon on a traditional houseboat, a must for any visitor to Kerala.

  • Backwaters - Experience Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a village based on the edge of Lake Vembanadu. The village is beautifully laid out over a number of different picturesque islands and is a wonderful example of how people live in the backwaters.

  • Periyar - Boating at Lake Periyar

Boating in the splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. Spot some fascinating wildlife from the boat including animals coming to drink on the lake.
