Insider's View

Your hosts like to get out on the river for the wildlife cruise quite early as morning time when the mist clears is the best time to see the animals. However, it can be quite cool at this time of day so make sure you pack something warm!

Chambal Safari Lodge is located about an hour from Agra and can easily be combined with a day trip to the Taj Mahal.

Set in 35 acres of private land, the estate was first used as an occasional home for family and friends when visiting and trading at the nearby Bateshwar Livestock fair (which still runs to this day, every November). The property was refurbished by the current owners and is split into a charming main building (which houses six luxury rooms) and eight cottages surrounded by woodland.

The main building (Mela Kothi) houses the dining room, bar and a small library. Breakfast is served in the main house, and lunch often on the lawn in front of the house. The owners consider themselves real foodies and take pride in making delicious, home cooked food for their guests.

Other than the relaxing atmosphere of the lodge, the primary reason for a visit to Chambal is the unique range of wildlife found there. The grounds themselves are home to Palm Civet Cats, Jungle Cats, Foxes, Jungle Hares and Fruit Bats whilst just down the road Marsh Crocodiles, Garial, Turtles, a huge number of species of birds and even rare Gangetic Dolphins can be found in the Yamuna River. Chambal Safari Lodge is one of only a couple of local organizations to have a licence to take guests on to the river, so its a real privilege to head out by boat in the early morning with a guide.

We also suggest taking a trip to Bateshwar with your hosts - it is a fascinating little town and feels very off the beaten track.

Chambal Safari has 12 rooms in total. There are two spacious double rooms and two suites in the main house. Each of the 8 cottage has twin beds. Scott Dunn recommend rooms in the main house. The period furniture and furnishings remind you of the heritage of the building and give them an elegant feel.

Tea and coffee is available in the main garden throughout the day and guests are welcome to make their own cuppa as often as they wish. Mineral water is complimentary and available upon request.

Indoor/outdoor games:

There are several board games available to guests in the library. A cricket set is put to good use throughout the season.

When to go

The local area here is very much like Rajasthan. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away from European winters.

Summer extends from April to June. It is s the hottest season, with temperatures ranging from 32 degrees C to 45 degree C, so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get cheaper rates if you dont mind the temperature in the high 30s.

The second season - technically the "Monsoon" (although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall) extends from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. 90% of the rain Rajasthan can expect occurs during this period. Lakes and rivers will be higher from mountain run-off and flowers and grasses come to life, bringing added color to the landscape.

The Post-monsoon period is from October to November. The average maximum temperature is 33 degree C to 38 degree C, and the minimum is between 18 degree C and 20 degree C. The official "season" for hotels in Rajasthan starts in October. It’s a great time to travel - warm and sunny during and perfect for exploring and relaxing.

The fourth season is "winter", and runs from December to March. With day time temperatures still in the high 20's during the day this a very popular time to travel. Hotels are at the their busiest over the Christmas and new year period. Be aware though that December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also fairly standard to expect some fog in December and January.
