Insider's View

Your hosts like to get out on the river for the wildlife cruise quite early as morning time when the mist clears is the best time to see the animals. However, it can be quite cool at this time of day so make sure you pack something warm!

Description

Chambal Safari Lodge is located about an hour from Agra and can easily be combined with a day trip to the Taj Mahal.

Set in thirty five acres of private land, the estate was first used as an occasional home for family and friends when visiting and trading at the nearby Bateshwar Livestock fair which still runs to this day, every November. The property was refurbished by the current owners and is split into a charming main building which houses six luxury rooms and eight cottages surrounded by woodland.

The main building, Mela Kothi, houses the dining room, bar and a small library. Breakfast is served in the main house, and lunch often on the lawn in front of the house. The owners consider themselves real foodies and take pride in making delicious, home cooked food for their guests.

Other than the relaxing atmosphere of the lodge, the primary reason for a visit to Chambal is the unique range of wildlife found there. The grounds themselves are home to Palm Civet Cats, Jungle Cats, Foxes, Jungle Hares and Fruit Bats whilst just down the road Marsh Crocodiles, Garial, Turtles, a huge number of species of birds and even rare Gangetic Dolphins can be found in the Yamuna River. Chambal Safari Lodge is one of only a couple of local organizations to have a licence to take guests on to the river, so its a real privilege to head out by boat in the early morning with a guide. Alternatively, take a trip to Bateshwar with your hosts, it is a fascinating little town and feels very off the beaten track.

Please note that Chambal Safari Lodge is closed from May until October each year.

When to go

Due to temperatures and precipitation, Delhi and much of northern India can be an extreme place to visit during certain months of the year. The hottest months of the year are May and June, during which time temperatures can get up to 40°C. The coldest months are from December until February whilst the monsoon season is from the end of May through to August. During this time although the the temperature cools, the humidity is very high, and rainstorms are frequent. It is not advised to visit during these months. The best season to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and very cool, making it great for sightseeing.

Please note that Chambal Safari Lodge is closed from May until October each year.
