Description
The Rajbari Bawali is a beautiful heritage hotel set in the outskirts of Calcutta. Teeming with old world charm and dating back 250 years, this chic Indian hotel has been lovingly restored. With just 30 rooms, guests can enjoy the tranquil setting here.
The Rajbari Bawali is a haven of neo-classical design, just over an hour from Calcutta. Guests will transported back in time surrounded by antiques and rustic furnishings. This Mondal mansion was once home to the Zaminders of Bengal, and over the years has been used as a backdrop for the silver screen. Now, guests can also enjoy the grandeur of the palatial home.
Discover Bengali traditions and the rural village of Bawali during your stay at The Rajbari Bawali. Local businessman Ajay Rawla spent time in the painstaking transformation of this dilapidated old mansion. Today The Rajbari Bawali retains its character; a mix of ornate design and rustic furnishings. And with just 30 rooms and suites, it makes for a quiet, romantic retreat.
The main feature of each room is the hand-crafted four-poster bed. Like much of the furnishings found in the hotel, it has been crafted in a traditional Bengali style. There are different rooms and suites to choose from, but the Zamindari Junior Suite is a good option for couples wanting a little more space.
Dining at The Rajbari Bawali is very relaxed and no visit to Calcutta is complete without a taste of some traditional Bengali cuisine which influences date back to the time of the Mughals. At lunch we recommend you try Bengali Thali, a wonderful mix of flavours. Every evening, after the oil lamps are lit, experience the evening puja performed by the hotel's staff. This is a spiritual ceremony of Sanskrit prayers which are offered over the house and Bawali village. Later enjoy drinks before dinner under the frangipani trees.
Around the hotel, guests can enjoy the large pool as well as the tranquil Mantra Spa. If wellness is something you are looking for, there are a range of therapies to choose from including learning about the art of detox as well as emotional wellbeing packages. The Rajbari Bawali is an ideal place to end a trip through Calcutta and northeast India; rural retreat with so much history waiting to be discovered.
