The village of Trongsa is located on the main Bhutanese highway and is a necessary pit-stop for guests wanting a more in depth tour of Bhutan given the long drive times, so quite often Yangkhil will be a one night stop, and is clearly the best place to stay in Trongsa. Quite often, you would need to stop at Trongsa if adding Bumthang to your itinerary. The town has a fantastic main Dzong and the views over the sweeping Mangde Chu Valley. The Trongsa tsechu (festival) takes place in December or January.

The resort has 21 rooms in blocks of four rooms, with upper and lower floor rooms (better to opt for the upper rooms which have better views and are quieter). The resort is fairly new, but the architecture draws heavily on Bhutanese influences, with modern touches here and there. The outdoor terrace and gardens are somewhat tatty, but we must admit there is a charm about the place. Each room has a comfortable sit-out with views of the Dzong and valley. The rooms themselves are perfectly comfortable, although won't win any prizes in terms of quality. You won't find flat-screen TVs or mini-bars, but clean hardwood pine floors and comfortable (albeit a little hard) beds, either Twin or Double. You can find tea/coffee making facilities and the bathrooms come with a shower and bathtub with ample supply of hot water and basic amenities.

Yangkhil has a main restaurant offering buffet lunch and dinners with a variety of Bhutanese and sometime continental options, and you can always find something that will be appetising. Breakfasts are cooked to order, and we suggest asking for their superb omelettes. There is WiFi throughout the resort, but given Yangkhil's location, isn't always reliable, especially in the rooms.

Overall, Yangkhil certainly meets all the requirements for a night's stop and the chance to wander around the impressive Dzong before returning to your sit-out to look out over the valley. It is simple, but does have a lovely charm about the resort. The staff are friendly and attentive, the food is pretty good and the views are wonderful.

There are 21 rooms, in cottages each containing four rooms in each (2 upper and 2 lower) each with a private sit-out and balconies for the upper floor rooms. The tiled bathrooms come with bathtub and separate shower, and basic amenities. You can select from either twin or double rooms. Do note the rooms do not have TVs or Mini Bar/Refriderators. In the winter, the rooms have heaters. They also have tea/coffee making facilities and hair-dryers on request.

Yangkhil Resort has a restaurant serving buffet meals (Indian, Bhutanese and Continental), a lounge, small business center providing WiFi, gift shop, terrace, bar and the hotel has a laundry service.

When to go

In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts here from November to March. The Monsoon occurs between June and August when the temperature is normally between 8° and 21°C. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.
