In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts here from November to March. The Monsoon occurs between June and August when the temperature is normally between 8° and 21°C. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.

Insider's View

Worth upgrading to the suite - you get far more space and the upgrade cost isn't a great deal.

Whilst in Thimphu you must go to the Takin sanctuary - more extraordinary animals I have never seen

Opt for a room near the clock tower for a more peaceful night, although pack your ear plugs in Bhutan!

In the winter if you have been out trekking and are a little cold, head to the bar which has a real mountain resort feel with a roaring fire.

Head to the bar for a few pre-dinner drinks, it's such an interesting place with bags of character!

Description

The Druk is a charming, yet simple traditional city hotel and is located in the heart of Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city. With 51 comfortable good value rooms, tasty food and friendly service, the Druk provides a great base from which to explore the city.

It is all about location with the Druk Hotel, as you are literally at the center of town, overlooking the main square of Thimphu. As you will probably spend most of your time in Bhutan in rural settings, the blend of having bustling markets, small restaurants and city life on your doorstep might actually be welcome. The Druk is also great value, so if the budget doesn't stretch to the Taj Tashi or Amankora you can opt for the Druk which is perfectly fine for a few nights.

There are 67 rooms and suites in the Druk, and have been updated to a good standard. The rooms are somewhat small in size, but the suites are really rather large. Expect classic Bhutanese fixtures and fittings, with hand woven carpets and bright, vibrant colors defining the rooms, from a mix of gold, red and green. All bathrooms feature a free-standing bathtub which is ideal for a long soak after a day-walk in the mountains. All rooms have LCD TVs, room service, WiFi, mini bar and a nice selection of toiletries (which you don't always get in lead-in hotels in Bhutan).

Moving downstairs, and you will find the restaurant which offers a mixture of international and Bhutanese cuisine. If you want, the Taj Tashi is only a short walk away, so you could opt to stay here and eat at the Taj. There is also a cosy cocktail bar called Hi Jinks, a mix of shabby-chic and old-world charm (think of sitting on a comfortable leather sofa, glass in hand). There is also a small fitness center, sauna, steam room and they offer massages.

Don't expect the world with the Druk - it very much offers what is says on the tin at a good price. Being in the center of town, you might well hear the odd wild dog bark at night, and if you are a light sleeper then the Druk is not the hotel for you. The staff are polite and friendly, although don't expect the world from them. Overall, the Druk offers excellent rooms for the price it charges and a great location if you like to wander out and see local city life.

Druk hotel is a lovely authentic, small heritage property with just 40 rooms. It has plump furnishings with traditional Bhutanese painted border motifs giving a cosy feel. It's bar is furnished with comfortable leather sofas and warmed by an open log stove.

Druk hotel has a wonderful authenticity to it. The hotel is an old building and the rooms have been restored in the traditional Bhutanese style. The staff are wonderfully friendly and the bar manager will make sure you get the best cocktail possible.

The Druk Hotel in Thimphu used to be the best hotel in town, and for many years let newer hotels take the crown. However, it has recently had a big refurbishment and the rooms are looking great. In terms of location, it is great to just walk out and explore the town, which is truly your only experience of its kind in the country. I love the free-standing bathtubs in the rooms, but really suggest opting for a suite. The main lobby area is a little grim, but the bar around the corner is pretty inviting. Although I didn't eat, I think it might be worth heading to the Taj for dinner if you are a foodie - it seems fine but not packed with that much imagination. The downside with many places in Bhutan is that stray dogs bark at night. They tend to meet at the archery ground, so a city facing view is better (although the views over the archery ground are more beautiful - you just get the dogs barking). In terms of value for money, the Druk is a lot less than the Taj and about 20 times less than the Aman. If you want a truly local Bhutanese experience, then the Druk is perfectly comfortable for a night or two.
