Our guide to Japan

Hiroshima & Miyajima

To the west of Japan’s main island of Honshu lies Chugoku where the Hiroshima Prefecture can be found. Hiroshima needs little introduction, synonymous with the tragic atomic bomb that was dropped on the city during World War Two. However, there is so much more to discover here. Off the coast, why not combine a trip to Hiroshima with a visit to Miyajima, made famous for its red Shinto shrine.

For a historical fix, travel to Hiroshima where you will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. The museum gives an intriguing insight into the devastating events surrounding the attack on Hiroshima at the end of World War Two in 1946. Today, Hiroshima is a modern and thriving city, renowned for its food. Try okonomiyaki, the local dish, or other delicacies like oysters and maple-leaf pastries.

The picturesque island of Itsukushima, more commonly known as Miyajima, Shrine Island, is just a short ferry journey from Hiroshima and well worth a visit. As the ferry approaches the island, take time to admire the magnificent red torri gate which appears to float on the sea. There are numerous temples, shrines and narrow cobbled alleys to explore and wild deer can also be found roaming through the countryside.
