Description

Located in the former courtyard mansion of a silk merchant from the Qing dynasty, Jing’s Residence is built in the authentic architectural style of northern China, nestled amongst dusty curio shops and bustling restaurants in the old city of Pingyao.

Part of the Relaix and Châteaux collection, Jing's Residence is a small boutique hotel located in a stunning, renovated old mansion blending in harmoniously with the traditional walled city of Pingyao, just a short flight from Beijing.

The Residence is ideally located in the heart of the old town and encompasses a series of grey-brick pavilions built around a set of four courtyards. Tables and chairs are located outside each pavilion where guests can relax while reading, drinking tea, or soaking up the historical atmosphere.

In addition to the luxurious accommodation, the Residence also features a dining room where guests can enjoy an extensive menu of international and local favourites. The Residence provides a cosy library and a bar that make it the perfect home-away-from-home for discerning travellers.

Unobtrusive landscaping features bamboo, a water element, white stones from northern China and traditional brick-paved walkways that connect the various courtyards. The dramatic lighting at night enhances the courtyard's almost palpable sense of time and history.

The ancient walled city of Pingyao, located in Shanxi Province, was established some 2,700 years ago. It hosts some of the best-preserved traditional architecture in China and mostly stands as it was during its heydays in the late Ming and Qing dynasties. It has been listed since 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pingyao is such a charming little town with a lovely and easily navigable streets and Jings Residence fits so perfectly into the whole atmosphere of the place. As the name suggests it is the converted house of a former residence and as soon as I walked in the door I felt immediately welcome. The ancient timber walls and high ceilings are so atmospheric and the scent of incense hangs in the air. The rooms themselves are laid out around an internal courtyard and are in contrast quite contemporary which works really well. There is an excellent restaurant on site, the best in Pingyao and the breakfasts are fantastic looking out of the floor to ceiling glass windows onto the buzzy street outside as the town goes about its daily business.

The boutique Jings Residence is the smartest hotel in Pingyao and fits perfectly into this beautifully preserved town. Yes, the area has grown into a tourist destination but I don't feel that it takes away from its beauty or charm. In comparison to the cities of Beijing and Shanghai you can easily stroll around the city stopping in at local shops selling antiques and small hidden away restaurants which serve some of the best food that I tasted on the whole trip. Jings Residence itself encapsulates the feeling of the town with a completely individual and boutique style with stunning design.

Pingyao was a welcome surprise, where I experienced 'ancient China' and Jing's Residence is the best place to stay within the city wall. With only 16 rooms, all set around 4 traditional courtyards, this is a boutique retreat with a really intimate feel. The staff couldn't have been lovelier, and Martin, who is the operations manager, will go out of his way to make sure you have a faultless stay. The rooms are all different, but all boast crisp white linens, stylish interiors, and top of the range bathroom facilities not to mention a complimentary mini bar, which is a nice touch. The food was top notch and remarkably some of the best I had tasted in China. I felt like I was sitting in a little cafe in France - delicious! To experience such a unique little bolthole in such a location, is truly exceptional.
