Rural Burma

Getting off the beaten track into Burma's rural heartlands is to many the highlight of visiting this wonderful destination. Experience remote villages, tribal people and breathtaking natural scenery. From the beauty of rural Shan State to the Himalayan foothills of Kachin State, your adventure awaits.

To the north of Inle Lake you will find the small town of Kalaw, once a British colonial hillstation and now a perfect base to head off walking in the nearby hills. Move to Pindaya and you will discover a region rich in agriculture. Both destinations are easily combined with a visit to Inle Lake, and there are opportunities to trek or cycle between them stopping off in a local monastery for a night. Move north and you will find the British hillstation of Maymyo, or Pyin Oo Lwin as it is now called. Famous for its Botanical Gardens, it is also useful as a staging post to explore Hsipaw which is located in Northern Shan and is again a wonderful trekking area. Both of these destinations are accessed through Mandalay. Right up in the north of Burma is Kachin State, famous for its valleys, tribal villages and Himalayan views. Stay in the town of Putao and take a series of day walks out into the wild.
