Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

There's never a bad time to visit the Galapagos. The peak season lasts from mid-June through early September and from mid-December through mid-January. The national park limits the number of visitors to each island and coordinates each ship's itinerary, so the Galapagos will never feel like Disney World. But if you visit in the summer, you are less likely to feel a sense of solitude and isolation. From December through to May the water and the air are warmer, but this is the rainy season. It drizzles almost daily for a short period of time. Ironically, this is also the sunniest time of year.

June through November, the Humboldt Current makes it way up to the Galapagos from the southern end of South America. The current brings cold water and cold weather, but it also brings water rich in nutrients and plankton, which attracts fish and birds. During this season there always seem to be clouds in the air, but it rarely rains. It's also quite windy, and the seas tend to be rougher.

Insider's View

As soon as you get back on board after snorkeling you are handed a delicious cup of creamy sweet hot chocolate.

Keep your ears peeled toward the middle of your trip for an announcement from the captain. You'll be passing over the Equator so be sure to gather at the bow of the boat, pisco sour in hand, and enjoy the moment.

Naturalist Guide

The crew includes one bilingual Galapagos Park naturalist guide with great experience and knowledge on the Galapagos Island topics such as wildlife, geology, marine life and biology.

Sun Deck and Jacuzzi

The semi-shaded top deck has single and double sunbeds as well as a jacuzzi.

On-board Equipment

There are kayaks and snorkeling equipment and wetsuits can be rented.

Activities

The Galapagos Islands are a must for wildlife lovers who will be enthralled by the curious nature of many of the unique inhabitants such as Blue footed Boobies, Galapagos penguins, giant tortoises and sea-lions. Being in the Galapagos is much like a safari, the crew includes a bilingual Galapagos National Park Naturalist Guide who will explain the fantastic flora and fauna that you will see on the islands. Your day is likely to include a couple of different visits on one particular island which are reached by inflatable rubber zodiacs and most days include snorkeling which is one of the highlights of a trip (wetsuits can be rented onboard the Sea Star Journey) and kayaking when possible.

Since the length of cruise varies and the visits to the islands are strictly regulated to ensure minimal impact on the wildlife, it is important for us to know if there are any particularly animals that you would like to see because they are not on all of the islands.

The Sea Star is a fabulous option for cruising the Galapagos in luxury. My favorite aspect of this yacht was feeling like I really was on an expedition to uncharted territoy. With a cabin on the top deck, I took the external stairs down to the main deck each morning and would walk to the bow of the boat for views of the sea. Search for dolphins on the horizon and catch spectacular sunsets in the evening.  Enjoy spacious cabins and ample bathroom sizes (a rarity on the ocean). Take a dip in one of the two rooftop hot tubs or relax under the Ecuadorian sun in one of the lounge chairs.

Having seen a number of the boats in the Galapagos there is little doubt that the Sea Star journey is one of the most comfortable and elegant options. She takes up to 16 passengers but because of her length and width she offers some of the best space of any of the boats and guests never feel on top of one another; the Cruise Director and guide make sure that your stay is as comfortable and informative as possible. The cabins themselves are surprisingly spacious and light filled because there is a window along the length of the cabin and natural light even in the bathroom.

There is an incredible amount of outdoor deck space, from the large outdoor dining table on the main deck, more sitting space on the second deck and the top deck which runs the full length of the boat with 2 jacuzzis, double and single sunbeds and plenty of other seating plus inflatable kayaks. Inside the main social area has a cosy seating area, bar and dining tables (meals tends to be a communal experience).

Your Galapagos experience onboard Sea star is similar to that of a safari; an early breakfast then a couple of hours exploring a bay or island, then back to the boat for a couple of hours before lunch, always greeted by a little yummy something and cold drink. After lunch you may navigate to a new spot and enjoy snorkeling or kayaking. No two days are the same but the wildlife experience is extraordinary and simply cannot be matched!

There is good storage space and a day bed, bathrooms have a rain head shower. Inside is a small fridge, bathrobes, air conditioning, TV and safety deposit box.

Although the cabins don't connect, the main deck cabins are best for families because the cabins are side by side and only accessed inside through a hallway rather than from outside.
