Stylish and relaxed, the Altiplanico echoes a small village like atmosphere, just far enough from the dusty main drag of San Pedro de Atacama
Beautifully sculpted from terracotta coloured adobe - rooms are all individual and each has a private terrace facing the Andes
Breakfasts here are epic and will help keep you fuelled for the adventures across the stunning desert landscapes
You’ll find solace from the sun in the cool shady terrace and a dip in the lagoon-like pool is highly recommended
Day time temperatures are luminous and agreeable all year round. A characteristic of the desert climate is the marked fluctuation in temperature between day and night. In winter (June, July and August) the average temperature is 22ºC during the day and at night it goes down to around 4ºC; temperatures can occasionally go below freezing. In summer (December to February) the temperature varies between 28ºC during the day and 16ºC at night. During these months the temperature can reach 32ºC. January-March can sometimes receive a little rainfall and cloudy skies.
On February 2, the biggest festival in San Pedro, Festival de la Candelaria, features a large parade of bands and dancers.
The spacious and stylish Altiplanico provides a laid-back retreat, just 15 minutes’ walk from the bustling town of San Pedro de Atacama, with wonderful views of the mountains and imposing Licancabur volcano.
There’s a small village like feel to the property and guests have access to everything they might need (including a laundry service and massages) to enjoy a few days in the arid desert in-between day trips to flamingo lakes, salt flats and bubbling hot geysers.
Individual terracotta cottages of traditional adobe-style architecture are dotted across the landscaped grounds. You’ll find curved adobe walls, local wood and straw roofs, whilst the interiors offer a spacious and refreshingly cool haven from the heat outside. Rooms are quite individual and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but all have a terrace and seating area facing the mountains. Although the owner has adorned the hotel with souvenirs from travels across Bali, there are also paintings that take inspiration from indigenous motifs and desert wildlife.
There are numerous eatery options in town and a leisurely stroll to check them out is well worth it, but if you’re feeling tired the onsite restaurant will happily serve you a delicious filling meal and there are plenty of ice-cold drinks available. Before going to bed, take a few moments to look up into the night sky, where on a clear evening you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular natural light show.
