Striking contemporary architecture
Botanique Hotel & Spa is a cutting-edge spa retreat with striking accommodations set among the forested mountains of Campos do Jordão two hours north of Sao Paulo in Brazil in an area the locals call the 'Hamptons of Brazil'.
Botanique is set among 700 acres, and features striking modern design and architecture using locally sourced chocolate-coloured slate, soaring triple-height glass walls and massive wooden beams reclaimed from 220 year-old farms from the state of Minas Gerais. The architecture blends seamlessly with the surroundings.
The 11 private villas and six suites, named after famous botanists, are sprinkled around the spa and Miña restaurant, the heart of the property. Cut into the hillside, the eight-room 10,000 square foot Spa at Botanique spreads across two floors and offers signature treatments with healing and relaxing rituals based on the natural botanical abundance of Brazil. There are also a gym, cinema, library, lounge, indoor and outdoor pools, a swimmable lake, and world-class cuisine.
Staying at Botanique however is not just about relaxing and being pampered, listening to good music and enjoying delicious modern Brazilian cuisine. The hotel also offers a great selection of activities such as horseback riding, capoeira classes, bird watching, mountain biking and a wide range of hikes. There is also a tennis court and a tennis pro to play with guests. Campos do Jordão is an idyllic weekend escape for chic Sao Paulo city-dwellers and for those looking for some pampering after exploring other highlights of Brazil.
There are six unique suites located in the main building around the spa and Mina restaurant and in addition there are 11 individual villas which each contain elaborate private gardens measuring up to 600m2.
Well-marked hiking and mountain biking trails, an outdoor swimming pool and swimmable lake, plus clay tennis courts, a private equestrian centre with Brazilian and world champion horses, spa, gym, private cinema and library.
Far from Brazil's famous bikini-clad beaches, the Mantiqueira Mountains have remained largely unknown. But this place, which opened in November 2012 in 700 acres of Atlantic rainforest, has put this stunning region on the intrepid traveller's map. The brainchild of passionate environmentalist Ricardo Semler and his wife Fernanda, the lodge was built by local tradesmen using rare Brazilian material such as jacaranda and chocolate slate. The gorgeous furniture - from curved, question-mark armchairs to Sergio Rodrigues' Ottoman-style pieces - was created by more than 100 Brazilian designers: small wonder Botanique took eight years to complete. All this (and super-comfortable beds in six suites and 11 villas) has its appeal, but the real joy is getting out to explore: ideally with a gallop across the valley on Olympic-standard mounts. Back at the lodge, sip cachaca by the fire before a foraged feast of mushroom ravioli at Mina. After which, book an arthouse flick at the hotel cinema or have a massage at the spa.
Nestled in a confluence of three rich river valleys, amid picturesque hillsides and stunning ridges in the heart of the Mantiqueira Mountains, just 12 kms from Campos do Jordão.
Botanique is a located a 2-hour drive from Sao Paulo.
