Description

The Cruceros Marpatag is a beautiful small cruising vessel which explores the western reaches of Lago Argentino in southern Patagonia. Departing from and returning to El Calafate, it explores the iceberg-filled waterways, glaciers and spectacular scenery of the western areas of the lake.

There are 21 cabins on board, each with an en-suite bathroom and large windows to take in the ever-changing views. There is a lounge area and bar, library and restaurant on board, where all meals are included for the duration of the cruise.

The three day trip embarks on Tuesdays and Fridays from El Calafate, winding its way through Bahia Alemanda in the afternoon. After breakfast you can disembark for a morning hike before traveling to Canal Spegazzini to enjoy lunch overlooking the glacier here, and then winding your way through the icebergs as you head to Upsala glacier. Your second night is spent at Bahia Toro at Seno Mayo, where the following morning you'll land and explore the Mayo and Black glaciers. You'll then continue onwards to the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the highlights of this region, and a fitting end to your adventures, before cruising back into El Calafate in the afternoon. (The exact route can vary depending on local conditions at the discretion of the captain, but this should give you a good indication of the kind of route your trip will take).

Location & Directions

El Calafate, Southern Patagonia, Argentina

The Cruceros Marpatago three day cruises embark from El Calafate and return to the same point, exploring the glacial beauty of the remote reaches of Lago Argentino.

When to go

The cruises depart from 15 September - 15 April each year. November to April brings the best weather, downpours are rare, and there’s usually enough sun to get fabulous photographs of the ice, with bright sunshine most days. In March and April, Fall colors are spectacular, as the lenga on upper slopes of the mountains turns scarlet. December and January are high season and the glacier trips are at their busiest. September, October and March is a great time to visit, when there are fewer crowds, and the weather can still be beautifully mild. Bear in mind, though, that weather on the glacier is completely unpredictable as the winds coming over the Andes are constantly changing.
