Description

Cavas Wine Lodge is an award-winning Relais & Chateaux property at the foot of the Andes in Argentina's most famous wine growing region, 30 minutes south of Mendoza and a superb place in which to experience the wonderful varietals of South America.

Renowned for being one of the continent's most luxurious wine lodges, Cavas Wine Lodge is set in a 60-acre vineyard in Lujan de Cuyo, south of Mendoza and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, as well as being home to some of the most prestigious wineries in Argentina. The lodge prides itself on an understated elegance with discreet service, privacy and refined comfort, and features a private wine cellar stocked with Argentina’s finest labels (such as Felipe Rutini and Carlos Pulenta).

Guests are encouraged to learn about the art of wine tasting so as to apply that knowledge to their wine tasting experiences in the area. Cuisine is a major focus here and guests can expect a rotating menu of high quality, locally sourced and creative dishes that highlight Mendoza’s reputation for excellent food. A small but luxurious spa is located on site and boasts a variety of treatment options, and occasional entertainment is offered on site such as tango and piano performances. The idea here is to slow down and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and Cavas makes an excellent choice for couples or honeymooners as it offers such seclusion and a romantic setting.

There are just 18 spacious guest rooms and villas, each set amongst the lush vineyards for total privacy. Each room is incredibly spacious and offers a lounge, private fireplace, indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a private outdoor lawn terrace with seasonal plunge pool and separate rooftop terrace with outdoor fireplace. In fact, guests can arrange for a rooftop sleep out under the stars should they wish. Guests can also opt to enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace whilst taking in glorious sunsets against the Andes Mountains which serve as a picturesque backdrop.

Cavas is set back about 3 km off the main road down a gravely path. The main building is white and reminds me a bit of Greek architecture. The have a mini amphitheater where they host tango shows in the summer. The rooms are all privately situated by them self in an adobe "hut" type building which doesn't seem to match the main building. The huts are built so that you will have a lot of privacy. You are surrounded by vineyard vines as far as the eye can see. The adobe huts have a plunge pool and a terrace with a fireplace that would be a wonderful place to take in the amazing mountain views while enjoying a glass of wine. There are no TVs in the room and the feel of the hotel is meant so the guests can unplug and relax. The service is very attentive, they have 80 staff to the 18 huts. No kids allowed under 12 which I can understand, as there would be nothing for kids to do here really.

Finally there's a luxurious hotel to accommodate the well-heeled wine fanatics who flock to the famous Argentinian vineyards of Mendoza. Cavas Wine Lodge is the brainchild of former upmarket hotel manager Cecilia Diaz Chuit and her husband Martin Rigal, who manages vineyards in the region. They commissioned Buenos Aires architects Gonzalez Pondal Malenchini to build 14 futuristic adobe bungalows among the vines with spectacular views of the Andes. Meanwhile, chef Sebastian Flores has created a traditional Argentinian menu to complement the excellent wine list.

Argentina came late into the New World wine market and even later into wine-related tourism. But the Mendoza region - famed throughout the world for its Malbecs, the perfect accompaniment to Argentine meat - now has a wide range of gorgeous small hotels. Cavas Wine Lodge is one of the very best. The architecture is bold and angular, and the 14 adobe-style cabana buildings spacious: at 90 square meters they feel like houses rather than suites. There are wine references everywhere, from the twisted grapevine chandelier in the lobby to the Moorish spa offering wine baths, grapeseed exfoliations and treatments using wine-infused massage oil. The restaurant makes good use of local produce and, as you'd expect, has a carefully compiled wine list. Give advance notice and you can dine by candlelight on your roof terrace or beside your private plunge pool. Mendoza enjoys round-the-year sunshine, but it if does not cool down in the evening you can sit by the fireplace in your living room, looking out at the vineyards and the peaks of the Andes, with a glass of Malbec.

Cavas Wine Lodge is unquestionably one of the top wine lodges in South America and everything about my stay there was top notch and luxurious without being over the top or pretentious. The unique accommodation, the superlative service and attention to detail made for such a memorable and enjoyable stay - not to mention the fantastic daily wine tastings at some of the top vineyards in the area. Each evening we would take a glass of the region's finest Malbec up to our room's private roof top terrace and with our log fire crackling in the background enjoy unparalleled views of the magnificent Andes Mountains.
