Walking into the Alvear is like stepping back in time to the most decadent period of the 20th century, the decor a very firm nod to the 1930s when opulence and style were key. The hotel was simply magnificent, and the attention to detail is second to none, ensuring our stay was perfect. Breakfast is served in the sunlight drenched 'indoor' terrace, offering the most sumptuous spread, you'll not need a big lunch! The rooftop pool opening in the summer is sure to make the Alvear the place to be during the warmer months.
The grandest hotel in Buenos Aires has been a high-society fixture since 1932. The 197 rooms and suites are opulently furnished with art and antiques; the original features are in tip-top condition; and the atmosphere manages to be both elegant and decadent. There are two restaurants, L'Orangerie and La Bourgogne, and an Art Deco-style Cigar Bar.
X-factor 'The service here befits the Alvear's high-society clientele,' says Gold List contributor Colin Barraclough. 'Bilingual butlers press clothes on arrival, concierges handle anything from flower deliveries to chopper charters, and personal shoppers unearth hidden gems.'
If James Bond was in town, this is where he'd hang his hat. In fact, Sean Connery has stayed here, because when it comes to sophistication, the Alvear Palace is the best bet in Buenos Aires. It's hosted scores of dignitaries since opening its doors in 1932, and although new and more affordable hotels are making it something of a gray ghost, the Alvear is still stately and swanky. It's all about world-class service and thoughtful touches: butler service, fresh flowers, feather beds with Egyptian-cotton linens. The lunch buffet is out of this world, and the super-chic French restaurant, La Bourgogne, is one of the city's best.

There is no doubt that the Alvear Palace delivers on many levels. Being the 'grande dame' of Buenos Aires hotels, it has a stately opulence and certain formality and is best suited to those looking for a traditional luxury experience. The service and facilities however are undeniably impressive. I loved the cigar bar and the new spa, and the location in the heart of Recoleta can hardly be bettered.
