The ski season in the United States is longer than that in Europe. Most resorts open sometime in November, with Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in that month) being a common opening time, and stay open until mid to late April. The Rocky Mountains in Colorado and Wyoming have the highest peaks and due to the semi-arid climate, have abundant snowfall with some great powder. The exceptionally high altitude means December through to February can be extremely cold, with temperatures sometimes reaching as low as -12C, although the skiing conditions remain very good. Warmer temperatures in the Spring mean more variable skiing conditions and softer, forgiving snow.

I would recommend heading up to Game Creek Chalet after spending five or so nights in Vail as it's the perfect spot for some peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of resort life. It really is a private and exclusive bolthole, perched high on a ridge at 10,500 ft and the views, in particular from the hot tub, are sensational. You will really feel pampered by your own private chef, on hand to prepare delicious meals to satisfy every palette.
And why not make an entrance - you will arrive in style - by snowcat!
