The ski season in the United States is longer than that in Europe. Most resorts open sometime in November, with Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in that month) being a common opening time, and stay open until mid to late April. The exceptionally high altitude means December through to February can be extremely cold, with temperatures sometimes reaching as low as -12C, although the skiing conditions remain very good. Warmer temperatures in the Spring mean more variable skiing conditions and softer, forgiving snow.

The town of Park City is nestled high in the Wasatch Mountains and boasts some of the best snow in North America. Formerly a mining town, it is home to three world class ski resorts, Canyons, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), making it one of the largest ski areas in the States, all of which are covered by one pass. It offers a fantastic range of recreation, as well as sophisticated dining and nightlife, all within a short drive from Salt Lake City International Airport. It was the epicenter of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games and offers exceptional skiing for intermediates and experts. Wide slopes are great for children and beginners, with very professional ski schools offering great tuition. With nearly 400 pistes, it's difficult to imagine there's more to do in Park City than world-class skiing or snowboarding, however, if you're a thrill-seeker, you should visit the Olympic park and try the Olympic Bobsled run. The park also houses a fantastic museum which is worth a visit. An extensive choice of shops, bars and galleries can be found on Main Street Park City, an historical landmark which you can explore by trolley tram.

Silver star is a great option for those looking for a more independent ski vacation in Park City. Location wise, its great as you are straight on the slopes and with an on-site ski hire shop and lift tickets available at the reception it makes it a hassle-free start to the vacation. Families looking for self-catering would be well suited here as there arent any hotel bars or restaurants. Condos are great value for larger groups or families, and some have hot tubs on the balcony.

This accommodation is based around a plaza which makes a fantastic community and a wonderful place to stay for families. From visiting Talullah and Vidalia, the resident dogs at the ski rental shop, to watching live music at the silver star cafe this little makeshift town is just fantastic. I would recommend the cottages for families traveling together and looking for a high level of luxury. There are great art pieces on the wall and amazing views across the resort.
