New Hampshire is renowned for its abundance of lakes, scenic highways, forest covered mountains which all add up to some pretty gob-smacking scenery particularly in the Fall. The Manor on Golden Pond enjoys the best of all worlds. It is perched in the forest with views out over Squarm Lake, giving it a sense of remoteness, yet it has quaint villages such as Holderness nearby and is within an hours drive of the White Mountain National Forest with its abundance of hiking and outdoor activities.
Built in the early 1900s as a country estate by a wealthy Englishman to impress his local debutante wife the Manor on Golden Pond still retains much of its original English country house character with wooden panelling and floors and fireplaces. Subsequent owners have added their own style so expect some quirky touches. Mary-Ellen and Brian Shields the current Inn keepers give their guests a warm welcome and are sticklers for detail and good service.
Rooms are in keeping with the English country house style and many have fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. Some of our favorites are the rooms in the Annex chambers in the gardens which have canopied beds and a cosy log-cabin feel. Wherever you are you'll have a peaceful sleep on the deep mattresses.
Food at the Manor is a revelation - Chef Peter is a talented local young chef who makes the most of the abundant rich (and often unique) local produce creating really fabulous dishes. The Van Horn Dining Room offers a formal dining experience so for more casual and lighter dishes there is Bistro M. Keeping with the English theme, you can try a per or post dinner glass of local hand-crafted ale at the Three Cocks Pub. Picnic lunches are popular for making the most of days out exploring the region.
At the Manor there is an outdoor pool and clay tennis court as well as a small spa area. At nearby Squarm Lake there are walking trails and plenty of water-based activities and then within an hours drive is the spectacular scenery of the White Mountains National Forest, a Mecca for hikers, adventure enthusiasts and photographers.
The Manor on Golden Pond has 23 guest rooms and one cottage. The Manor houses the majority of the rooms, there are four rooms in the Annexe Chambers and four in The Carriage House. Some of the rooms have fireplaces and/or Jacuzzis. All the rooms have superb views of the surrounding countryside, some have private decks from which to admire it from. Rooms have books and magazines, plush bathrobes, l'Occitaine products, wireless internet and air-conditioning.
