Hawaii is a year round destination with a tropical climate, with the very best months being April to September. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable. There is a rainy season from December to March which is also ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.

Set on the edge of the white sands of Kauna‘oa Beach, one of the most beautiful on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel offers contemporary and luxurious accommodations with a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere and superb facilities.

Just a 40 minute drive from Kona airport, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is tucked away from the main highway, approached via a winding road through the stunning Championship golf course that wraps itself around the property.

The architectural style of the hotel has won awards and the hotel is deemed a historic building, however, the overall style of the hotel may not immediately appeal, however, with this hotel, please don't judge a book by its cover.

With a huge repeat clientele, this very well established hotel is definitely doing something right. From the inviting swimming pool to the idyllic beach, one of the most beautiful and calmest on the island, it is an ideal destination for a relaxing stay on the Big Island.

The hotel offers 252 rooms and suites, making it one of the smallest hotels on the coast and ensuring a more intimate and personalised experience. Most rooms enjoy stunning views of the ocean from their private lanai's and the feel of the hotel is spacious and airy with the atrium style interior and outdoor living design.

Families are well catered for with a children's programme as well as family friendly pool and beach as well as suite style accommodation. Connecting rooms are also available on request.

For adults, the relaxing spa, generous sporting facilities and activities, not to mention the al fresco lounges and dining at the romantic Manta's restaurant, overlooking the ocean, will appeal. The evening fire pits, once lit at sunset, are a welcome gathering place for those who wish to enjoy the star filled sky or the regular visits from the curious manta rays who hunt for plankton in the water just below.

Beneath the somewhat unattractive exterior, the heart of the Mauna Kea lies in it's warm welcome, fantastic facilities, friendly service and beautiful location. A gem hidden away and well worth a stay on this fascinating island.

So we'll start with the exterior of the hotel. It has a wonderfully winding road leading up to the entrance, through the superb golf course and beautiful manicured gardens. The expectation is high, however, the result is underwhelming. The exterior of the hotel is something out of 50's car park build and the interior with it's concrete open corridors and open atrium also doesn't sit too well. However, don't dismiss it yet, looks in this case, are very deceptive, and if you can get past the outside, with this hotel, it's what's inside that counts. With 60% repeat business, it's definitely doing something right and as I got to know it a little better, this hotel really grew on me. It's not just the stunning beach, one of the most beautiful I've come across and also one of the calmest so ideal for families, it's also the warm welcome, the great staff, that make it a place to return to. The Beachfront wing is definitely the one I would recommend and the ground floor rooms can lead you straight across the lawn to the beach, so great for families. The rooms are a mix of traditional and contemporary, the suites work well too and the Japanese soaking tubs and private lanais off the bathroom are lovely little touches. My favourite part of the hotel though was Manta's restaurant. There's a reason it's called this, the manta rays that frequent these waters are attractive into the bay by the light in the evening and often come in close, a perfect little show to go with your dinner or perhaps when you're sitting out by the fire pit. Add to all this a real family friendliness and children's programme and it's a great option for both couples and families. You just need to look beyond it's looks and settle in the hotel and it's beauty truly shines through.
